Some one pls help me

Hello, I would like your advise. For the last 2 1/2 months I have been having this problem. It started with a feeling of something being stuck in my throat, a horrible "haking" cough which usually was dry in the beginning now I cough up this thick, clear mucus/phlegm that takes me about 1 hr to finally hack up it is so thick. I was short of breath and had chest pain right in the center of my chest (not heart related.) My sinuses would drain and I would have nausea/vomiting. I went to teh dr who said I either had acid reflux disease or ashtma. The inhaler he gave me did nothing. The Nexium he gave me does help some but not sure acid reflux is what I have. The last week or so teh shortness of breath and chest pain is gone. But I still feel like something is stuck in my throat, still haking up stuff and my sinuses are draining. My throat is actually raw from the coughing that I am taking chloreseptic spray to numb it so I can sleep. I have felt all along that I have an Upper Resp Infection or something of that nature because that is what it feels like. I have been on 4 diff meds since I have been going to the dr. Medrol dose pak, Prevacid, inhaler, Nexium(which is the same as Prevacid) but he will not give me a antibiotic. He says he doesn't want to give me something that I do not need, yet I have tried everything else, why not a antibiotic. I have had a chest xray about a mo ago it was normal, scheduled for barium xray tomorrow to see if acid reflux. Friday I went to dr he stated"I really dont know what you have keep taking Nexium and see what happens. I asked for referral to a specialist then he decides to give me this test tomorrow. I have had this for 2 1/2 mo. Someone pls help me I need some advise. Thank you.

I have GERD and acide reflex and your symtoms sound exactly like what I was feeling. Takes a month or two for the Nexium to work very well, if ever. But basically all you're going thru is pretty common with GERD.

Thank you very much for your reply. I just felt like I needed someone to say that. The whole thing drives me crazy, if it is acid reflux I can deal with that, but not knowing what to think was pretty scary considering my throat. Thanks you helped alot.

Hi honeydew677. I suggest that you have your thyroid checked. A thryoid disorder could cause this feeling and the symptoms you describe. For blood work, ask that they run a Free T3, Free T4 (besides T3, T4) and thyroid antibody tests in addition to the normal panel. These tests are not usually done but are necessary for a comprehenisve view. When you get the results, you can post them on the thyroid board at this site. The people there are very helpful.

You may also consider getting a scan done of your thyroid. This is not painful, and it is an easy test. Thyroid disorders are very common and usually easy to treat.

Good luck!

Re: Some one pls help me

It sounds like it is just sinus problems. Have you ever considered that you have allergies? Maybe try taking some antihistamines and see if your symptoms decrease? Some people with sinus problems might not have allergies but strong smells or airconditioning irritates the sinuses. If you are having clear drainage you do not need an antibiotic. Good for that doctor to resist pressure for the antibiotic (they are way overprescribed and this is causing all sorts of problems.) You would be having thick green drainage if you need an antibiotic. Constant post nasal drip from your sinuses can cause acid reflux because the drip is very irritating to the stomach. If you can decrease your sinus drainage then maybe the reflux will stop. Elevating the head of the bed, not overeating, and not eating before bed are other ways to decrease reflux. A lot of people gag on the drip and vomit. The irritation to the stomach from the drip can make you nauseated. Of course the reflux can cause that chest pain (indigestion). Your throat is raw from the drip. You said that you have had this for 2 1/2 months. The mold in Florida is at it's peak in the summer. Maybe you can post on the allergy area on this web site. There are sinus experts over there who can also help. Good luck.
