Re: Anything work for hormonal headaches?

Anyone know what would work for hormonal headaches OTHER than Motrin? I took Motrin for so long for all my problems. It was the only OTC drug that worked on me. Took it for tension headaches, cramps... It didn't work very well on my hormonal headaches though. Eventually I guess I just overdid it on the Motrin. My stomach is all messed up. I got a reflux problem now. It's under control, but I'm afraid to take anymore OTC drugs. So I need an alternative to stop the pain.

Re: Anything work for hormonal headaches?

I have hormonal migraines and I'm in my mid 40s so the hormones are all over the place, lol. I've had the migraines for 10 years now (they've shifted to mostly hormonal the last few years). I've just started topamax the past couple of months and it's really been great. I had 3-5 migraines a week and now I get maybe one a week tops. it's also improved the intensity, making them much easier to knock out with otc drugs (aleve) rather than the prescription triptans. it does have side effects but I'd say it's worth it if you're really suffering from the migraines. I also take prozac (low dose).

if your migraines are very predictable and your periods are still rather predictable, i'd suggest the many different prescription Triptans like Imitrex, Amerge and others. you can take these to eliminate your migraine and depending on the triptan (each is diff so if one isn't working for you, try another), you can work and function.

Re: Anything work for hormonal headaches?

BioAdoptMom3,I know exactly what you're going through. I've had migraines for about 15 years but they were very well controlled with preventative meds(anti-seizure and beta-blocker med) until the past year. I am 46 and I can't take any BCP's either. I am actually in the middle of a bad one now but the weird visual aura seems to have subsided and I have a horrible headache behind my left eye (like I always have had with a migraine). I took some Advil this afternoon and it helped for awhile but I think I need to take some more so I can get some sleep. I did read somewhere that nonsteroidals like Motrin,Advil, etc. can help them if you take them before the migraines hit. I have an excellent neurologist and he did tell me that migraines become less frequent and in some cases,go away completely after menopause. good Luck with them!

Start taking Naproxen, 500mg twice a day, two days before your period is due to begin.
