Unhappy Steroid Spinal injection and weight gain?

I recently had an epiderhal steroid injection in my lumbar. Since then I have had an increase in my weight. Has anyone else experienced this side effect after only one injection?

Re: Steroid Spinal injection and weight gain?

Hi there,

Only talking from a personal viewpoint here, not a medical one. I have been taking steroids for over 30 years continuously.

No, I am sure that the weight gain isn't anything to do with the injection. At least not just one injection. More than about 3 per year are frowned upon because they can have some side effects and maybe could cause some weight gain, but definitely I would not say after one injection. Also the usual thing to happen is that weight gain usually occurs when taking larger oral doses over a longish period of time.

Perhaps as you are having spinal problems, inactivity might be a part of it ? It's difficult isn't it to even move never mind walk about when your spine is hurting so much.

Hope this helps.

Re: Steroid Spinal injection and weight gain?

Hello,

I experienced significant increase appetite and weight gain almost immediately after my first set of epidural injections. My face got puffier too where people actually noticed and once my aunt, a nurse (who did not have knowledge of my injections at the time) asked if I was on steroids. So, yes, I do believe that steroid injections do cause weight gain. However, the pain in my back and neck did decrease and I was also taking Mobic which also causes water retention. I asked my doctor how long the epidural lasts in your system and she said about 4 weeks. After that time, my appetite and weight went back to normal. It is also not recommended to get the injections more than every 12 months.

Hi there I am new to all of this, and I seen where you posted that you have had a epiderhal steroid injection. I have had several of them and yes i gained some weight but it didn't last long. usually last for a bit but I have lost it all again only to regain after more injections.
