I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety but my doctor won't put me on meds due to my high blood pressure that is now under control thanks to lotrel. Does anyone know of a depression med that is safe for a person like me?
Hmmmm.....there are alot of people on this board taking beta-blockers along with antidepressants and or anti-anxiety meds. I wonder what the reasoning is? He can't just let you live and suffer with depression and anxiety. You might want to see a psychiatrist who would know about drug interactions. If it's the med you take for your BP then maybe it can be changed to allow you to try something that would relieve the depression and anxiety. I would certainly get a second opinion on that one.
I am on Atenolol and Lisinopril for HBP. I am also on xanax and paxil (and being weaned off of zoloft currently). The atenolol helps the panic to not escalate into a full blown panic attack and I LOVE that about it! It is true that sometimes HBP meds can aggravate depression, but I can't for the life of me see your doctor's reasoning on this! Please take Tori's advice and get an appt. with a psychiatrist. As she said, there's no sense in you suffering unnecessarily!

Well, lots of people with high bp take antidepressants, you just want to avoid the old classes like the tricyclics and you want to avoid the SNRIs like Effexor, those can raise your blood pressure. The SSRIs like Paxil, Zoloft, etc. are safe for people with high bp.
My P-doctor has me on Propranolol. It is beta-blocker normally prescribed for high blood pressure. It has a side effect of calming. Many people take it for stage fright and even anxiety disorders. If you search Google you can find many sites of people with panic/anxiety disorders who have benefited from Propranolol. I take it with Xanax and can tolerate it rather well
