Hemolytic Anemia Treatments

Has anyone here with hemolytic anemia been treated with Procrit also known as Epogen? They stimulate the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. I read somewhere that the medication hasn't been FDA approved for this purpose.

What treatments have worked for those of you who have problems, and at what count do you treat?

Thanks,
Jill

Re: Hemolytic Anemia Treatments

When my AIHA was active I was regularly on the blood disorders thread. Suggest you do some reading there 'cause there's lots to read. You will definately find some that have been on Procrit.
I wish you well.
Kindly,
Les

Re: Hemolytic Anemia Treatments

I asked my hemo doctor about this treatment to see if it would benefit me and he said no. Check the blood disorders thread and see my myriad of other treatments. At the moment I'm loving cellcept but have been sick with a flu and throat infection for over three weeks with no spleen and a suppressed immune system it's taking me forever to get better. I had my flu shot and everything but will see my wonderful doc again next week and see how i go. atm on augmentin and rulide combo plus prednisone, cellcept, prohibitor, folic acid, diazepam, endep etc. won't drop my steroid down any lower until i get a bit better. On 4mg now and have been for 2 months he wants to drop again but have to get better first. Hope this finds everyone on the mend. keep in touch

Thumbs up Re: Hemolytic Anemia Treatments

I have been on procrit and now aranesp for about 3 years. The only other meds I take for my chronic hemolytic anemia are foltx. Aranesp boots my HgB to a degree unless I have a viral infection or some other stressor. It is expensive but my insurance covers it. It definitely cannot hurt you so even if it boosts my hgb a little it is worth it to me.
