Re: Acid Reflux and breathing problems?

I found anytime you walk into a Dr office and tell them what you suspect, I think they go on a defensive mode. We possibly can't know what they know. I have an orthepedic Dr who won't even talk to you if you mention you saw something on the Mayo Clinic or any big health institute's website about such and such, not that the Mayo isn't infallible but get real, they must know as much or more than my small town Dr? They think we are searching answers to question "they" already know and will tell you if they think you should know it. If acid can't reach up into the throat then how do they explain a sore throat every morning? Sure it can be sinus, but when ya take the Nexium the sore throat disappears and how do they explain that? They don't like self diagnosis.

I get really fed up with medical people . I can understand that they cant know every new drug and theory on the medical scene as they dont have enough time to keep up but they dont seem to know the old established basics sometimes!
I agree! And it always seems like they are using simple copouts like "Well I bet its anxiety, here are some pills" or "Well what do you want me to do for you?". I have been met with both of these! For people on antianxiety meds for the correct reasons that is great and acceptable...but for an easy answer for doctors for a complex problem...NO!

Lightbulb Re: Acid Reflux and breathing problems?

Hey everyone,

I have been suffering with the same symptoms for a few months now and recently had to leave my nursing classes because I could not breath in class. I have symptoms of air hunger (continuous yawning because i feel like I cant get enough air in) and then my heart races and I feel dizzy and weak. The night before I was also having acid reflux really bad and I remember saying to myself "Oh boy here we go" (nothing good ever came out of the gurgling noise at night). That day I walked into a clinic and the doctor told me he thought it was due to ANXIETY and that I was probably hyperventalating and also gave me zyrtec and singulair cause he said maybe I was coming down with some asthma. Being so desperate for an answer I went along with the samples of medication and I am still taking them today. I should also mention that I am taking PROTONIX which sometimes helps (better that my symptoms in the begining). As for the anxiety thing I didn't recall feeling anxious at all, in fact I was quite relaxed and then all of a sudden I could not breath that well (no wheezing though). I wasn't very happy being told that it was all due to anxiety when I really didn't feel anxious, I also felt like it was an easy out for the doctor I was also having abdominal pain and was tested for an stomach ulcer which came back negative. Last friday I was eating at a mexican restraunt and the bought of difficulty breathing came back. I also had post nasal drip afterwards. I was recently reading a report on Hiatal Hernia and the symptoms match what I have been feeling. Symptoms are those of GERD and include difficulty breathing, chest pain and difficulty swallowing. I intend to see a gastroenterologist eventually to see if I do have a hiatal hernia. I would feel much better knowing what in the world is going on! Hope that helps a little! Good luck with everything!

Re: Acid Reflux and breathing problems?

My ent told me acid can't get up to my throat to cause my symptoms nor can it cause nasal congestion. My wife's ent told her the throat problems she's experiencing is caused by acid reflux. My sister's family doctor told me my problems are due to acid reflux, it is difficult to treat and I must take ppis for a long time. My respiratory and internal medicine specialist ran a bunch of hospital tests uncluding QV lung scan, nuclear tests, etc and determined I don't have copd or asthma but quite possibly due to Gerd. My breathing issues got better when I drastically changed my diet, cut out late night eating, coffees, sodas, etc. elevated my head when sleeping. The throat constricted feeling still there, dry mouth/throat, and pressure in back of neck when lying down, as well as the nasal congestion, mucous in throat.

I take 1 40mg protonix in morning, zantac 150 at night, sometimes some neo citran or cough syrup before going to bed and 1 60mg sudafed.

Hi Kaikrishna yep acid reflux can cause breathing difficulties such as you have mentioned and when this happens it is sooo scary. I have found that the acid can and does get into my throat which makes me not be able to get my breath as in breathe and it is panic ++ Best thing you can do is go and see your doctor who can prescribe a few medications that can help. By the way I was diagnosed as having Asthma cause of a cough that went on and on but it turned out to be from the reflux. Good luck in getting rid of the problem or reducing it
