pain / burning in my back

About a week and a half ago my back started hurting a little bit. Didn't feel like much (maybe just a knot or something) so i assumed i slept on it wrong or did something to it at the gym. The pain persisted and actually grew to where it felt like someone was digging their knuckles into my back. In the last couple days it's become a lot worse. Debilitating, even. Now, not only do i feel the knuckle-type pain, but also like a burning sensation under my skin. When i got up this morning i could barely bend down to get my boxers off to shower. Then when the water hit that spot... OUCH. It burned like a *****.

The spot is on my back, on my left side a few inches from my spine. It's halfway up my back (about even with my sternum in front). There is no discoloration, and apprently no difference in temperature from the rest of my back. I'm not overweight, i haven't changed any routine (sleeping, eating, sex, etc.). I've tried ibuprofen in various doses, acetaminophen, migraine-formula excedrin, ice, a heat patch, stretching it out, rubbing it... nothing has touched it.

The only health problem i normally have is acid reflux, which was also acting up recently, even though i take prilosec.

does this sound like a muscle thing? bones? internal organs? I have no insurance. I know a doctor who would give me a free consultation, but he's very far away and i wouldn't be able to pay for x-rays or anything like that if he requested them. I also wouldn't be able to see him regularly if the problem required it.

Re: pain / burning in my back

To me it sounds like it is muscle related. Give it a few more days and if it is not better I guess you will have to find a doctor

Re: pain / burning in my back

Sounds to me like the area you are describing is the area where your Rhomboid muscles are (scapula to spine).
A simple muscle pain means a sprain or strain
Burning muscular pain usually means a significant tear or detachment of some sort.
Best advice for muscular pain is REST & ICE!
Because you are in acute stage, you should take it easy and lay off the exersize and keep from exerting your spine/shoulders/arms (since doing so will cause your scapula to move and may increase your pain index) until the swelling (which you might not see but trust me, if its muscular and you feel pain - there is swelling) is reduced.
Take some Advil (or a similar product) which will help reduce swelling thus reducing your pain.

I would advise AGAINST having an LMP massaging your back until you are out of the acute stage ...

Provided you take it easy and dont over-exert yourself, you should start to feel better (not healed but better) in a few days.

If you dont notice an improvement in about 5 days, see the doctor.
or
If you have a funny feeling this is _something more_, see the doctor.
Its better to be out a few bucks for gas and a doctor visit in order to have some peace of mind and chances are if you did go, they probably wouldnt need to do an xray unless you presented with other symptoms (skin hot to the touch, fever, significant visable swelling, dizziness etc)
