Arrow Blood pressure meds and their effects on glucose?

Greetings.

I read where high blood pressure meds can effect the results of a glucose test. I am curious because I never had higher than normal glucose levels until I started taking a high blood pressure med. I take Lisinopril-HCTZ which contains a diuretic. If this is true, how and why does high blood pressure meds effect ones blood glucose?

Ron.

Re: Blood pressure meds and their effects on glucose?

I am a diabetic type 11 and I take blood pressure meds. It has no effect on my glucose levels. The amount of food I eat certainly does. In fact, before I was on blood pressure meds my blood glucose went high sometimes and low sometimes. I find that taking the blood pressure meds helps my levels.

I take Lysiniprol too because of the long term effects of Diabetes (going on 12 years ) and don't have this issue, although I'm a Type 1, so maybe it varies?

Lately have you been stressed, not sleeping well, not doing physical activities or changing your diet? <I've found those sometimes can be a factor in my blood sugar levels also.

Always...

I take the same med...don't know either if that has affected my levels...I'm not one to drink a lot of water...you'd think that would be the easiest thing in the world to do...but I'm just not that thirsty...so it's an effort for me. But, I've read that drinking a good amount of water is suppose to be good for you - so I think I'm going to try that again as well...I hate taking meds...take the lisinopril, toprol (1/2 pill 50 mg) and lipitor. I used to take lipitor only every other day and with my recent labs, my doc wants me to take it every day. I will...but I'm determined to get my weight down, exercise and beat this thing!!! I'm like you...I'm not terribly overweight - but do need to lose some, so hopefully, it will make a difference. Sounds like we have similar issues...good luck!!

Ron, yes, I have read and heard that diuretics and beta blockers, especially Atenolol can affect your glucose. I always had very normal glucose levels until they put me on Atenolol 2 years ago. Slowly but surely my numbers are going up. I asked my dr. and hubby's cardio man about it and they both said it could have an affect. Hubby is type 2, and was on BP meds. for years with no problems, yet when they put him on Atenolol his numbers went a little higher. Since we both have learned this, he and I have both cut our doseage down, as U have to wean off Atenolol.

Hope this helps, and U should talk with your dr. about a possible alternative BP med. Good luck, and hope your glucose numbers weren't too bad, mine last test were borderline, and that is scaring the pants off of me.

Good luck, and best wishes...
