Anal bleeding

Hi everyone,

This is for my Gran who is 85. She has regular constipation and all the symptoms of IBS which seem to have resolved themselves the last few months except for the constipation. She has seen a Gastro Doctor who felt her tummy and said everything feels ok there and some blood tests were performed which came back slightly Anemic.

But she's been spotting little amounts of blood from her anus when she goes for a poo. 10 minutes ago she called me because she found a lot of blood on the toilet paper. It's not a huge amount but more like a light flow period. I asked her did she strain herself and she said she did a bit and it got "stuck" so she knocked it off her anus with her finger. But it was before this she noticed the blood.

I thought her finger could of caused the bleeding but its a bit heavy for a scratch and as its been happening for a few weeks now and she's Anemic (it would explain why she's Anemic with the bleeding) I was wondering what else could cause this?

She had a finger inserted into her Anus 3 weeks ago by the Gastro Doc and she said everything is normal. I was thinking it could be piles or hemarroids but wouldn't the Gastro of noticed this? What else could cause anal bleeding.

Thanks in advance and sorry for TMI.

Re: Anal bleeding

Well, the bleeding could indeed be from hemorrhoids or something related. However it can also indeed be caused from straining too hard, as this is one of the main causes of hemorrhoids to begin with. Has she tried a stool softener, such as Miralax, or Magnesium Citrate. These are the best, and I don't recommend using laxatives such as Correctol, or any of the ladder. Also if she wanted to use something natural, medium amounts of fresh Apple, and Celery juice should do the trick. Also if she's been slightly Anemic, I would recommend her increasing her Iron, or possibly have her Doctor prescribe her some Iron tablets to resolve this.

Re: Anal bleeding

Hi Van,

Thank you for your reply. I'm talking my Gran to the Doctor in the morning for a thorough check up. I too think the bleeding is due to Piles or straining too much. She is a devil for straining. I will try the Celery juice and Apple juice/fresh apple. Thank you again.
