Re: Help me with this new symptom!

Well I saw the Dr yesterday and she said it's an irritated broncial tube. No xray, just listened to my lungs, did a lung volume check (breathe into a machine) and prescribed clariten and an inhaler, Maxair. My confidence in this is low. I think it may help a very very little but I still feel a very mild pain in the right side. I suppose it could be an irritated br. tube. I still have anxiety and am struggling to be happy. On top of this one of my best old friends called last night and told my he has leukemia and almost died and will need a bone marrow transplant. I was in tears thinking about him. We used to be like brothers and roomed together in grad school. We went to HS, college and grad school together and were in each other's weddings. It's easy to be depressed some times. Back to my problem, it's wierd, it hurts a little just about all the time, and I also feel it when eating, as if the food going down is massaging or going near the irritated spot. My question is whether it's bronchial or esophageal. I'm tired of all this. Thanks for listening.

Re: Help me with this new symptom!

Well, it's been 9 days since I saw the Dr and I really don't think what she gave me is doing much good. I still have the urge to cough and when I do I simply irritate things more. I have the same feelings I did 9 days ago. So I made another appt to see the Dr this Thurs - this time I'm seeing the real Dr and not his nurse practitioner. I'm just so darn worried!!! I have a tightness or something on the right side of my chest. I know this could be muscle tension. Has anyone here ever felt an urge to cough due to anxiety or stress? Do any of you think this could be stress and anxiety related? The worry is getting me down. Neither the Maxair inhaler or the clariten do much, as I said above. However, I think I notice an improvement if I take a chlorazepate 7.5 mg . At least, I calm down a bit.

Please help with any comments or personal experiences!

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Help me with this new symptom!

Hi Tom, I will cough when I am anxious or stressed. I have mild asthma, and always think I am having an asthma attack, and I"m not. I was coughing really bad a week ago, and had my Dr. listen to my lungs and took a chest x-ray and there was nothing wrong. My lungs were perfect and clear, but I still cough all the time. I know now after years of this that when I'm stressed I will cough and clear my throat more. I hope this maybe helps you. Good luck. Michelle

Re: Help me with this new symptom!

Well, I should update my status. I had a chest xray on 11/30 and it was perfectly clear. The Dr gave me antibiotics for 5 days as he thought it was pertussis (adult whooping cough). Well, this is all fine and I really don't have much of a cough but I'm still totally scared and anxious because I do still have an urge to cough because of a sense of a tickle in my throat and a tightness or pressure like feeling on the right side - I would say it's along the nipple line right between my right nipple and center of my chest. I just wonder how much of this could be anxiety caused. I feel like seeing an ENT, a GI dr and then a pulmonologist. I suppose this could be overkill but I am sick and tired of feeling this feeling inside. Maybe it's just nerves, but maybe it's not! I guess a clear xray is good news but I'm still thinking that there's soft tissue damage - maybe gerd or LPR. I am such a good hypochondriac!!! When the dr told me the xray results on 12/7 (yes, it took a week to get them!) I told him it was still bugging me and he said to give it 3-4 weeks and then he would consider steroids or a CAT scan I think. Why steroids?????

I've dealt with so many internal pains over the past few years that have been anxiety related and they really drive me nuts!

I'm looking for comments on similar experiences by you guys - please!!

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Help me with this new symptom!

Hi again Tom, I will mention that with my breathing /cough problem I also get pain. It used to be on my left side but now I get it on both sides . I think, after reading a post titled Air Hunger that it could be the lung/s expanding causing this pressure/pain sensation and I think thats right...
I over breath when I have the coughing sensation and the lungs over inflate. This may shed some light on your pain also. When I researched it you can have one lung expand more than the other or it may feel like that. The pain can be just on one side more than the other....
I understand your frustration and you are probably over sensitive which is what most anxiety people are . Thats why we have these issues...and symptoms.
you do really need to enjoy something that takes your mind away from your breathing / cough / tickling and see if it settles when your total immursed in it and you can then tell if its anxiety related....goodluck debbiep
