Tired of hearing about PPI's being bad

Aren't you tired of hearing about PPI's and other antacids being bad for you. I just read another article how they stop your body from getting nutrients. I have one problem with it, what is the alternative? I've tried everything to stop my nighttime reflux and only Pepcid Complete gives some relief. When I was using only natural pills (DGL, Prelief, Aloe Vera etc. etc) nothing worked. I'd wake up with a burning throat. At least now my throat doesn't hurt as much. I don't want to take that pharmacy junk but what choice do I have? And yes I tried everything else (low fat, lift up bed, no chocolate, no this and no that) and where did it get me? Nowhere. Sorry, I'm just pissed off.

Re: Tired of hearing about PPI's being bad

I agree with you. It gets old after a while. I was on protonix for a while. That was about 2 years ago. I have since lost 85 pounds, eat healthy and still had some reflux so today is my first day of no coffee. It sucks but I feel great today. I just think the media has to have somehting to talk about and this is the "flavor of the week"...lol If I need a PPI again, then I will definitely take it!

Re: Tired of hearing about PPI's being bad

Right now I am taking buttermilk with each meal and it seems to be working. Not a cure but definitely helping enough to only need a Tums once today and none most days. Apparently buttermilk helps neutralize stomach acid.

Give a try and see if it helps.

I do not drink anything with caffeine, eat small meals.

Re: Tired of hearing about PPI's being bad

Pepcid is an H2 blocker and not a PPI. I tried the PPIs but side effects were so bad I had to stop them. Now I just take Ranitidine which is also an H2 blocker. It helps some but I still have a lot of nighttime symptoms. Maybe I will try the Pepcid and see if it works better. It's so hard to find the right thing to help.
I don't think I could drink buttermilk. How does it taste?

In my opinion, it's all about the carbs you eat. I had bad heartburn/reflux and have since went on a low carb diet and it has helped tremendously. Are any of you on a low carb diet? I was taking a PPI every day and now I'm only taking it once a week. Only because I cheat a lot. I also take a probiotic which replenishes the good bacteria in your gut.
