Addicted to Xanax

I am new to this so please bear with me. I am a deep cover narcotics agent and am currently in the middle of a horrible divorce. I have been taking Xanax for approximately 9 months. My prescribed dose is 5 1mg tablets per day. I have never been medicated before and I believe my doctor may have given me too much. It hasn't affected my work thus far, but I notice a decline in my productivity. I am sluggish and I Hve been told that I sometimes slur when I speak although I don't feel like I'm in an altered state of mind. I have been trying to get off of the medication, but it is so hard. I need advice.
I am an excellent agent with a career ahead of me. I've been in Law Enforcement for 12 years now and my job is in jeapordy. I recently had a random drug screen and even though I have a prescription for xanax the doctor who reviewed my screening said he has to recommend that I be placed on light duty until I am completely off of the medication. I have to get off. I am 100% willing to do whatever it takes. I don't like being medicated to begin with. I need advice. What is the best and fastest way to kick the xanax? Thank you for your time and I greatly appreciate any help.

Re: Addicted to Xanax

Hi

Sorry to hear of your problem. Xanax is a benzo. Unlike opiates, there is no fast track to coming off them. Coming off fast may very easily induce seizures. Even on a slow taper, expect anxiety to soar. In my opinion, the best bet is to go back to your prescibing doctor and let him design a plan for you to taper down slowly and safely. A fast track off just opens up too many doors to high risk physical and emotional problems.

Please go talk with your doctor.

Re: Addicted to Xanax

Hi Jay....I was having terrible panic attacks, and I was prescribed, Xanax, and/or Ativan, which is a similar drug... After a while, I didnt try to work thru the panic attacks, I would just take a pill immediatley.. I ended up in the hospital, becuz I ran out of the Ativan..It was not a very good situation, I was scared and went into the most major panic attack, I could have had..

The hospital gave me xanax again, only while I was in the ER..none to take home... They had advised me to go talk to my Mental Health worker. I did just that, they panicked ,and wouldnt fill another prescription, and told me I had to wait till the script was ready to be filled again....And of course I started to panic again... I went to my new family doctor. and explained what happened. I told her about the ER and what the Mental Health place said. She was FURIOUS, becuz you can have a seizure , and it is quite common I guess. I told her, if she gave me enough for 3 weeks, I would taper off of them...I kept my word, and didnt have a problem..When the prescription which I originally had in the first place came due,I asked for less. And I have never taken another one..Just knowing they were in the house, was enough for me to get past the fear of the panic attacts... I was a lucky one I think, I prayed like nobodys bussiness. I chose the taper method,if I was you I would not suggest the cold turkey method.

I dont know if this helps, but it was my experience and I just wanted to share it with you... I wish you a painless recovery how ever. And also suggest , that you stay close to the board, you will have people to help with support and to ask questions to.... Good luck, IM A MESS

Re: Addicted to Xanax

Hi Jay
Sorry to hear about your situation. Xanax has a half life and stays in your body longer than opiates. Taper is the way to approach this. It will take a lengthy amount of time. I know you are anxious and willing to do whatever it takes to get off them, but jumping off is not the way to go about this. It will cause more harm than good and you might find yourself in more of an awkard situation at work if you try to do this fast. You are on light duty now, if you jump off you might be on 'no duty' as you now under observation, I would guess. for a while. I know you must be an excellent agent, sorry about the mess with the divorce, sorry the doctor prescribed these to you. Benzos are no fun to get off. You have been on them for 9 months. Is your regular doctor a gp? I suggest you go to an addictions doctor who specializes in withdrawl maitanence and he/she will have alternative measures for you to take for your stress after you finish the taper plan. Good luck

Re: Addicted to Xanax

People don't get addicted to drugs for no reason at all. I would recommend drug rehab. after consulting with a physician.
