Re: tonsillectomy and pain meds

Don't crush the pill.. try to slide it down with a spoon full of apple sauce. If that doesn't work and it is the pills in the medrol dose packs.. you can do the vaginal trick.. since you are female.

Sincerely,
MG

Yeah, prednisone and its derivatives are really, really bitter and they taste icky! It's hard to find a food that would mask the taste! Applesauce probably isn't strong enough. What about if you loaded up with cinnamon? I don't know if that would work....

I wasn't aware that women could take it vaginally, that's interesting!

Re: tonsillectomy and pain meds

My doctor prescribed me liquid generic Lortab and an anti-nausea pill. It's perfectly fine to take pills, it's just getting used to swallowing again. Like the ladies at the hospital told me beforehand, people with tonsillectomies think that they can't swallow anything, but in reality, we have a whole lot more space in our throats than before. They even offered me crackers while at the hospital (I graciously declined!).

I like what was mentioned earlier...the liquid medicine forces you to drink water afterwards, so it's much more helpful in the long run. Besides, when you take pills, they'll get caught in your mouth as you try to swallow them...yuck!!

Re: tonsillectomy and pain meds

I hope your surgery went well today.

The liquid pain relieve is the best way to go. The two that I was given last year were Lortab Elixir (hydrocone) and Roxicet (Oxycodone). The Roxicet was a knockout remedy for sleep and the Lortab Elixir allowed me to function during the day.

Re: tonsillectomy and pain meds

I was given Darvocet pills and it made me sick! Switched over to oxycontin and things went smoother. Quit the narcotics all together and went to just OTC tylenol after day 4. Pills were fine for me to swallow right after surgery, but I did get some liquid antibiotic.

I had about three miserable days due to nausea but days 4 onward were pretty easy. Completely recovered and back to normal routine 7 days later. Never encountered the dreaded scab problem or increased levels of pain, I think because of the amount I drank. My scabs just thinned out and are hardly there at all now 13 days post op.

Pills were ok!
