Re: tonsillectomy and pain meds

2nd day tonsillectomy the nausea and vomiting from the pain pills (which did go down okay by the way) are worse than the throat pain. So now I am only on tylenol. I also have been using arnica products to help along the healing. I am also spraying aloe juice into my mouth. I can only keep popsicles and jello down, everything else comes back up. I got some bad news --one of my tonsils had a tumor and I now mst see an oncologist

Re: tonsillectomy and pain meds

girlcat41: I'm sorry to hear that they found a tumor in your tonsil. I haven't even had my tonsillectomy yet, so I don't know as much as most of the people who post on this board and can't really offer you any advice, but I do wish you good luck at your oncology appointment. I also have a few questions for you, IF you don't mine me asking: what strenght of arnica are you taking hHw is the aloe juice helping - is it a liquid or gel?
Thanks!

Re: tonsillectomy and pain meds

Update on steroids and advice for others. I was the one who mentioned the bitter steroids. The next day I did let it break up and dissolve in Raspberry Sherbet and it did hide the taste quite a bit. This morning I was actually able to swallow the pill with a gulp of the sherbet and it went down smoothly. However, I ran out of Raspberry sherbet and got rainbow sherbert instead. Not sure if I'm more sensitive to the cold or the citric acid (lemon-lime), but it burned tonight. The good news, I was able to eat Oatmeal. nice to have something of substance instead of just popsicles and sherbert. Thanks for the advice and help! So far things are going much better than I had expected/feared. For those of you considering surgery, go for it and if you have kids, get help. My MIL has been here since day 1 and my mom is coming tomorrow to switch off. Her help has been invaluable.

Re: tonsillectomy and pain meds

hi--I ended up in the ER today with chest pain. I have pnuemonia; not uncommon after surgery so I was put on strong antibiotic. Also the ENT on duty was shocked that i was on day three and unable to take pain meds and couln't believe i had been given vicodin pills. So I got some liquid roxicet and then a dose of steroid in my IV. I went from being completely unable to speak this AM to now talking and being understood. I also got a cat scan which showed my lungs looked clear of any tumors(that was encouraging). As far as the arnica goes I began taking arnica montana 6c, andstaphysagria 6c 3 days before surgery and I also used arnica ointment liberally on my neck area. Maybe this is why I was able to tolerate the pain without the pain meds. I will continue with the arnica and staphysagria for several weeks
