Finally home

I wanted to thank everyone who posted when I had to leave town to take care of my mom. My doctor was able to give me my refills early and thanks to the advice of Ozzy and Travel, I saved all my receipts.

Mom is doing okay now. They have changed her meds dramatically and she will be starting very light PT for her should in another couple of weeks. Anyway after a week in the hospital we got her home, and thank god I was there because she was all but helpless. I was getting ready to leave to come home and mom insisted on taking a hot bath, so I agreed to help her get in and out. BAD MOVE! In trying to lift her out of the tub, I slipped on some water that had splashed onto the floor and managed to break FOUR ribs.

I ended up staying at mom's house an extra week, because I could not handle an eight hour car ride with the busted ribs. I didn't accept any extra meds for the ribs except for the morphine and phenegran they gave me in the ER. I explained to them that I am a chronic pain patient and told them exactly what meds I was already taking. I think I shocked the ER doc. The nurse said she'd never had anyone turn down pain meds before, especially with something as painful as broken ribs. I just told her it didn't feel right and if I couldn't get by on my current meds that I'd see my doc when I got home.

So anyway, I did call him when I got home and he tore me a new one. Told me that I'm trying to do much by taking care of my parents eight hours away and my own family (he's fully aware of my son's condition). I told him that if I didn't do it, it wouldn't get done. I won't just desert my parents or my kids because I have pain.

I'll tell you what though. After having 4 broken ribs, I'm not liable to b*tch about my back hurting me

Thanks again to everyone who answered my previous post and for all your prayers and good wishes.

Re: Finally home

LottyLiz-
I'm so glad you are home safe & sound, and very happy to hear your mom is doing better. Fingers crossed, and positive thoughts are being sent that she will continue to improve.

As for those ribs??!!?? OUCH! It hurts just thinking about it. I've heard broken ribs are excruciating! No way to keep them from moving when you breath, and no way you can walk around not breathing- the ultimate "catch 22" I guess!

I'm sure the ER was suprised you turned down the meds, but you did the right thing. Take care! Thanks for updating us

Re: Finally home

Hopefuly you will give yourself time to heal a bit now, was chuckeling at your response to er folks.
I had surgery in December they were all prepared to send me home with scripts for post op i said no too. If i needed anything i would call my pain doc. They asked if i was under contract i said no i have been seeing him a long time and keep nothing from him and wanted to continue our relationship without any issues.
I saw him a week after surgery he laid into me as well.Explaining post op pain is post op pain. Oh and he teased me a bit if you go to the dentist for a root canal or extraction i expect you not to say no. Just let me know what they gave you next apointment.....
Extra pain obviously changes the "mix"........
Please try and take care of you now, and of course call mom lots ........Keeping good thoughts going for you both!

Re: Finally home

Well considering I'm on roxicet 30mg, 3 per day; Lorcet 10/650 for b/t up to four times a day, somha and Cymbalta, I figured the hydro 7.5's weren't really going do much good. Plus I am under contract with him and even though I was in another state, it didn't feel right. Besides, I normally I don't use my b/t meds that often, so I was able to use them on kind of a schedule for the first week. Now I'm back down to maybe 6 a week.

As far as my doc goes, he tends to be overly cautious about the things he doesn't want me to do. Since my hubby got laid off my insurance went kaput, so I won't be eligible for Medicaire for 9 more months and at that time he is hoping that I might be a surgery candiditate. So he doesn't want me overdoing it and messing myself up even more. He's part doctor, part therapist and part "grandfatherly" figure.

Anyway, I've been resting up the ribs (not to mention all my other chronic pain parts). I just find it very hard to sit down around doing nothing. Oh well, this to shall pass..........then something else will happen. lol
