Unhappy the pill and hair loss- whats is good for hair growth?

hi, i never had a problem with the pill for about 6 years, switched to yaz and lost a ton of hair. after that i stopped taking the pill for a couple of weeks and then was put on micerette (?) - generic is kariva. i am noticing thinning of my hair and my hair line specifically.

my dermatologist ran blood tests to rule out any 'disease' type things and they all came back normal. i am therefore thinking this is related to the BCPs.

does anyone have an idea what BCPs are best for growing hair - or atleast not losing it? what makes some pills better? should i stay to pills with low androgen levels, or do those help?

i'm confused and my dr's don't seem to believe it's BCP related, but it's the only thing different. and they just want to keep switching my pill to shut me up - or so it seems

Thank you for any advice, personal stories, etc!!

Re: the pill and hair loss- whats is good for hair growth?

There's a whole thread on the Hair thread about what vitamins are good for helping hair grow back healthy. I took Mircette but had to stop cause it was one of the brands that gave me migraines. Never had any hair loss that I can remember. I was on it I think for 8 months

Re: the pill and hair loss- whats is good for hair growth?

Hi Bella,
I feel for you. I lost a lot of hair on Yasmin and have not recovered yet. I was on it 2 years, starting losing hair on it about 18 months after starting it. That was 9 months ago, and I see very little improvement.
I don't know why- Yasmin is supposed to be hair friendly, in fact derms prescribe it to help with hair loss. For some reason it has been known to cause hair loss in a normal woman with no previous hair issues.
Previously, I had been on high androgenic pills with no problems! Those are the ones that supposedly cause bc pill hair loss. I have been too scared to try another pill, although I am hoping in a few months I'll have enough improvement to be brave. Right now I want the 99% protection.
****** pill estrogen levels- by doing that I found a great site that lists all bc pills and their hormone levels, and it tells you which pill is most helpful for what issue (acne, weight gain, etc.)
And the hair board on this site can be very helpful. Did your dr. test your ferritin (iron stores) level? Low ferritin can cause hair loss too.
It is extremely frustrating and you have to be patient- Personally I can't believe its almost a year! I really thought by now I'd be doing better.
My personal advice though is to stop bc pills for awhile. I think any pill might continue the hair loss at least thats what I am afraid of. I think hair needs to recover before it is "shocked " again. Good luck!

P.S. My doctors are not convinced its the pill either- but I had all the tests too so it must be! I'm not happy to hear about your hair loss but relieved to know someone else also lost hair on Yasmin or YAz.

Same here - lost loads of hair on my head but gained them elsewhere on Yasmin! On top of all the other problems I had on this damned pill...

I had really bad hair loss on Estrostep Fe (medium androgen level). Yes, definitely stick with the low androgen level ones. Do a search for some on the net and print it out and take it to your gyno. Some good ones to try are: Ovcon-35 and Brevicon. I've been on both of these and never had a problem with hair loss on either one.
