hemorrhoid removal

my husband has to have a remorrhoid removed next week. he is very nervous and scared that he will have alot of pain. does anyone have any advice i can give him? is there alot of pain involved?
next question. does anyone have any idea why a hemorrhoid would stay for so long? my husband has had one for years now. he has tried everything to get rid of it..he has even been to a dr. who has tried some sort of "laser treatment" and still nothing. I am hoping that this specialist can help.
thanks in advance,
m

Re: hemorrhoid removal

Hi,
I had mine removed yesterday morning. So far I have not experienced any discomfort. I was scared to death with all that I had read and been told. There was some burning when the local wore off but they gave me iv pain killers and pills to get ahead of the pain and that seemed to have worked. The packing is out now and that wasn't as bad as I had anticipated either. I think seeing a colon and recal surgeon helped he does these all the time. As for meds I'm on toradol 10 mg every 6 hours and darvocet-n 100 every 4 hours. They suggested that I use an alarm clock to make sure I don't miss any doses. He also prescribed a compound of Metronidazol5 and Lidocaine 2% to apply 3 times a day. I am sitting up without a ring and I don't feel very much pain. I realize everyone is different but so far so good. I had external and internal hems removed. good luck. I thought I would post because all I read were horror stories and it made me really nervous, I'm glad it's over and I'm not paralyzed with pain. Hope all goes well!
Take care, Linda

Wink Re: hemorrhoid removal

i had three hemmroids removed plus fissure and syfincter repair all at the same time. usually gets painfull during and after the first bm,the pain meds
keep you somewhat in less pain .there are a lot of nerves down there that
are sensitive and it will take a while to heal.make sure you have soft flowing
bm ,no pushing and take moms or miralax and stool softeners untill you have
healed enough, the after prep is vital for proper healing after surgery.the
best advise is to get it over with and make sure its done by a board certified
colorectal surgeon.it can take up to three months to two weeks for recovery
or longer,i never heard of no one not having no pain after this ,some at the day after or untill there first bm say that there not pain due to meds but
the first bm and during the first month is the hardest part.it will get better
and you can get on with your life. water ,bran ,fiber drink, stool softeners,
are the key and no pushing.do not get impacted some do after this surgery
do this a week before to make sure your bm are flowing.your husband will
be fine and let him know that he will heal and get on with his life

Re: hemorrhoid removal

Does your husband have a lot of pain from his hemorrhoid(s)??? If not, DO NOT have this surgery!!! I had a hemorrhoidectomy last fall and I still fear having a BM every day since that day. I had the surgery 8 months ago tomorrow. Every day I wish that I could go back and NOT have that surgery. It was the dumbest thing that I have ever done. I wish that I had found this website, like you have, before I had the surgery because I NEVER would have had it.

If you have tissue cut down there it can cause problems because removing rectal tissue can lead to tightening which can lead to other problems like fissures. Make sure your husband SPECIFICALLY asks what the Pros and Cons are for this surgery. Also make sure that you have a well-reknowned colorectal surgeon do the surgery if he absolutely thinks it is necessary to have it. You can go online and pay money to research physicians. I wish that I could be in your shoes because I know that I would make the decision to NOT have the surgery. I wish you luck.

Re: hemorrhoid removal

Hi again,
It's now day 5 and I won't lie the 1st bm. was not pleasant....it took a couple of hours to recover from that but I had stopped taking my pain meds and I was able to do laundry including ironing and hanging curtains. I think when it's comes down to it the hems bothered me more than the surgery but I also lived with them for 17 years. Their were times when I'd have to lie down with ice for a couple of hours after using the bathroom before the surgery and I think I feel liberated now. So maybe if I hadn't have gone though all that the surgery would feel alot worse now. It has been a very humbling experience....
