barbituates are sometimes used for controlling seizures...it's also used in the w/d process from benzo addiction.... so he may be telling you the truth,....but it is possible to abuse barbituates too....hope this helps some/

some anti seizure meds DO indeed contain barbs,phenobarbital is just one of many different ones some docs will use in order to control seizures when they don't respond well to the newer ones like neurontin,tegratol and others.can you possibly find out the name of the med in question?that would help you alot in determining whether or not he is actually telling the truth.do you have access to even the bottle of pills to just look at that label?you would be able to look up the Rxing info on any med he is actually taking very easily once you know the actual name of them.Keep us posted,marcia

Its dilantin and topamax. plus otc sleep aids. i know phenobarbital will cause it but hes not on that one.

Yep,dilantin did it i'm pretty certain.i just did a quick check and it states that 'phenytoin"(dilantin) IS related to barbiturates in chemical structure,so there ya go,i do think it would be possible for this to actually show a positive,just call your pharmacy and confirm it.but from what it states in the Rxing lit,it does sound very possible he is telling the truth here.i hope that eases your mind some.take care,Marcia
