tried skipping period...spotting now?

About 2 months ago I went to the gyno to refill my bc perscription. She had asked me if I had ever tried skipping my period by not taking the placebo and going right to the next pack. I had said no but she highly recommended it. Well, last month I was supposed to get my period during the last time i'd be with my bf for a while (im a college student) so I took my gyno's advice and took the next set of pills. Everything was fine. I knew that it'd send my body off guard, but there was nothing I was concerned about. Now I am on the last week of pills before I get my period, but I'm spotting. At first I thought it was bc my bf was here this weekend and we had sex....(dry, possible rippage.....it happens) But just a moment ago I passed a clot. Idk what's going on here! Has this happened to anyone else? I don't know if I have my period or what. I still have a week of pills left.....so now what?

Re: tried skipping period...spotting now?

Your doctor should have told you that skipping placebos can potentially cause breakthrough bleeding and/or spotting. It's always possible because some women's bodies just don't tolerate skipping. Also, depending on what pill you're on, it might not work. She should have also told you that.

What brand are you taking? It is a tri-phasic? Or is it the same level of hormones throughout the month? The monophasic are better suited for skipping. But again, some women just find that they can't skip, regardless because their body needs to have a period anyway.

Not much you can do at this point except wait it out. You may have a prolonged period and it might take a cycle or two to get your body back to normal. Your doctor really didn't tell you very much, or give you enough information because she should have covered all of this with you. You may want to consider finding a doctor that is more forthcoming with potential side effects or problems. Otherwise you're just getting really basic information which doesn't cover all of what you need to know.

Re: tried skipping period...spotting now?

I'm on Apri, which is monophasic.
The doc I saw is a university doc, not my normal gyno. But I guess I wish I had known. Hopefully it won't be too bad :/

I don't think it's going to necessarily be bad, but it might take some time to clear up the spotting/bleeding thing. And you may find that your next cycle is a little weird. It's good that you're on a monphasic, but perhaps you're just one of those unlucky ladies that can't skip.

I skipped a few times while I was on because of vacations and other stuff, and I didn't have any problems. But the more I read these message boards, the more I'm finding that there are women out there who aren't as lucky and who can't skip for whatever reason. And some do successfully skip a lot but then find that one day it doesn't work to skip anymore for some reason.

The pill is like that. It can work great for you for a while until one day you just start having problems. But it sometimes happens so gradually that you don't even realize it's the pill until you really sit down and think about what's happening. That's why it's important to really pay attention to how you're feeling and start keeping track of any strange new symptoms that occur, the longer you stay on the pill.
