yasmin for hair loss and acne

I've been taking Yaz for nearly a week now. I transfered from ortho tricyclen low striaght ( the next day) to yaz. I've read that yaz is suppose to help acne and hair loss. I think I have androgetic alopecia. How long will I see yaz working. Has anyone taking yaz for these reasons? My derm recommended it.

Re: yasmin for hair loss and acne

Are you at least 30 yr old? Most men and women do not show signs of this kind of hair loss until the age of 40 but some women have shown signs around the age of 30. It can be inherited. With this kind of hair loss you loose hair on the crown of your head. Your hairline does not receed.

Women who have PCOS have been told they have alopecia until their PCOS was discovered.

Since you are taking BCP if I were you I'd take a B multi vitamin too. BCP destroy B vitamins along with processed foods, caffine and meds. Lack of B vitamins causes hair loss too.

Did you have a hormone test done to see if your hormones are out of wack? If your hormones are out of balance that can cause hair loss or cause your thyroid to off balance. If your thyroid is off balance that can also cause hair loss.

Re: yasmin for hair loss and acne

I'm only 26. and this started a year ago. It started with stress then turned into andro alopecia I think. I've seen many derms and I feel like they can't exactlly pin point it. So now I'm on yaz. Yes most of my hair loss is on top and back that's the most noticable, however my whole hair is thinning out. I don't have telogen eluv. anymore because my derm has done a hair pull test. I'm going to get tested for PCOS soon and I've been tested for other things but everything is fine. My thyroid and testosterone are a bit high I will test this again soon. I had thyroid surgery and on levothyroxin which has been lowered because of my complaint of hair loss but it didn't help. I don't drink caffeine and I'm taking multi vit pills. I just don't know whats' going on. Is the yaz going to work?

Re: yasmin for hair loss and acne

Adrenergic hormones such as testosterone are usually off when it comes to hair loss. People with PCOS have high free testosterone and total testosterone levels. Estrogen also low runs low with PCOS.

Did you have a complete thyroid with free uptake, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone(total and free),FSH, LH, Follicle-stimulating ,
DHEAS,Prolactin ,androstenedione?

A complete CBC is done too to see if insulin and glucose is in check. A high glucose level can indicate insulin resistance, a diabetes-related condition that contributes to PCOS. Cholesterol is high too in women with PCOS.

As far as the Yasmin working to treat your hair loss. I just don't know. If indeed you have hair loss due to androgenic alopecia usually a pill with high amount of estrogen is given to over ride the testosterone. Most of my friends that have PCOS are either on Yasmin, Demulen, Desogen, and Orthocyclen. I dont have PCOS that I know of but I do take Desogen and my hair use to fall out when I was on that. I now take the name brand which is Ortho Cept and I take mutli B vitamins and it seems to have stopped fallling out now.

I guess until you have all your bloodwork done all you can do is try the Yasmin. You say your testosreone and thyroid are already high. I think if you can fix that then your hair loss would slow down or stop. Some of the medications fix the thyroid can cause hair loss tooIf you don't have PCOS then it's possible that the BCP are the cause for all your problems.

Re: yasmin for hair loss and acne

I am actually on this site because I believe that YAZ might be the
cause of my hair loss. I've been on YAZ since October and in March I noticed the part above my bangs getting bigger. I didn't think anything
of it until last week when i actually looked at the back of my head in the
mirror. It is see-through! I have to style my hair totally different but
it's still noticeable in front. This has caused me to be really depressed.
My Gyno said she doubts that it's from YAZ but said that if I want to
stop it to see then I can. I've read that stopping a BC pill can bring on
hair loss also, so I made an appointment to the dermotologist and we'll
see what she has to say. I will post anything new I find out in the future.
But, it is funny how this pill's side effects are hair loss but dermotologists
perscribe it for hair growth.
