Antibiotic resistant UTI?

I was diagnosed with a Urinary tract infection. My doctor referred me to a Nephrologist and he prescribed me Amoxicillin for 10 days. He said that it was mild and reassured me I'll be better in no time.

Its been 5 days and I'm not 100%. Overall, I feel better than before but I'm still not fully recooperated.

Could my UTI be antibiotic resistant? I've been reading about them lately.

If I don't get better, then whats the next course of action?

Re: Antibiotic resistant UTI?

Have you had Amoxicillin before? I think if you take a certain antibiotic enough times in your life, your body buils up an immunity to it and it's no longer effective. By day five, you should pretty much be feeling hunky dory, but definitely finish up the round of antibiotics regardless of how you feel right now.

If they do not work, your doctor may prescribe a different (possibly more powerful) antibiotic. And I'll point this out - you do not need medication to rid yourself of a UTI. I have had a few particularly nasty ones before and I cured them by drinking lots of water and making sure I had access to a bathroom at all times...and, of course, making sure I went to the restroom the moment I felt the urge to go. Drinking lots of cranberry juice is also a good way to ease a UTI. Using the water method, I cured myself in a little over a week.

different strains of bacteria respond to different antibiotics. It's possible this strain is resistent to "amoxicillin" but not antibiotics all together.. your doc probably just needs to put you on a different antibiotic.

Re: Antibiotic resistant UTI?

Ive suffered uti's on and off for 15 years, some episodes worse than others. many antibiotics havent worked. Actually the only one that seems to work now, is only prescribed by Consultants in hospitals as its strong, but it does work. Ive had urethral stretches, one worked great i didnt have an infection for a yr, then it came back, and had another stretch, that one hasnt worked. My Consultant says that some people have a missing enzyme which lines the bladder wall, im missing this, and may have to live with this, it is horrible and drags you down, im still going through treatment now

Re: Antibiotic resistant UTI?

You may need a different anti-biotic. I have had several uti's and I always was prescribed something stonger than amoxicillin. Also, your doctor needs to make sure this hasn't infected your kidneys. This can be very dangerous and damaging to your kidneys. I had to be hospitalized with a kidney infection and receive iv anti-biotics to get rid of the infection. Make sure you see your doctor before the infection spreads to your kidneys if you can.
