Allergy to sun

Just this past spring I started to break out in a red, blotchy rash on parts of my skin that were exposed to the sun. I am 24 years old and have lived my whole life outdoors playing sports and going to the beach...never have I experienced this. The rash itches non-stop. As the affeted areas slowly get accustomed to the sunlight the rash disappears. Lately I've finally gotten to the beach and now my unexposed back is full of the itchy rash again. I'm sure stangers think I have some gross skin conditon.

I've been to my derm and I got clarinex which occasionally works, but at the time I assumed there was something during my daily routine causing this. Now that I have been exposed to the sunlight again, and the rash is back, I'm certain the sunlight is causing this.

Does anybody else experience this? What do you do to alleviate the itching? Any advice? Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Allergy to sun

I get the same thing for the past 3 years. Never had it before and I'm been sun bathing for over 30 years. Do they look like mosquito biytes but clumped together? My rash is usually on myy arms, neck and shoulders. They do go away after a few days but I just came back from the beach after 10 days in the sun and got them again. They do itch like crazy. No pus and anything like that. Does that sound the same? Also my 28 year old son just started getting them after a trip to Barbados. My opinion is that the sun is really strong these days and that's whats causing it. My regular MD told me it was the sun too. Take care, Linda

Re: Allergy to sun

Certain medications and mineral suppliments can cause light sensitivity. You might want to check all the minute side effects of you medications. Other than that.. could it be a heat rash effect? Best of luck finding your answers.

Sincerely,
MG

Re: Allergy to sun

Little hard red bumps are exactly what I have and they itch like crazy. What's so strange is that I have spent a great deal of time outdoors (I coach and teach outside) and all of a sudden now, twenty something years later it shows up.

Do yours show up a lot? I noticed that during the spring when I began to wear shorts the rash was on the back of my legs and arms (when I wore a t-shirt). Now that those areas are tanner, I don't get the rash there. However, I finally was able to get to the beach and hang out by the pool just this week and now the rash is all over my back and stomach. I tried acclimating myself to the sun, knowing this has happened, now i'm looking for a scratching post every two seconds!

Do you use any lotions that really help? Thanks for your input, I have NO IDEA what's going on with this!
