Question Problems with Lantus? Anyone??

Hi everyone! My husband was just switched from Novolin 70/30 @ 15 units 2x a day to 30 units of Lantus in the morning used in combo with his Novolg that he uses at meals, units based on carb consumption.

Well, after being on it for 3 days and having excellent results--sugars going from the 600's in the afternoon to normal range of 70 to 110--We noticed his legs starting to swell up. Swell from the mid-thigh down to his ankles on both legs. No where else in his body is any swelling occuring, just the legs.

Now at the same time he also started on Remeron for depression as ordered by the doctor. He went to the doctor, and the doc said get off the Lantus and back on the Novolin but increase to 20 untis 3x a day. We are so bummed because the Lantus was working so wonderfully keeping his sugars down. He had been on Lantus about 3 or 4 years ago and had had no problems with it back then but went off because our insurance changed and the new insurance did not cover it.

Anyone else have problems with Lantus or should we blame this swelling on something else???

Re: Problems with Lantus? Anyone??

I haven't heard of Lantus causing this kind of problem. I would think that the cause is something else, especially since he has used Lantus before. Apparently oedema (Swelling due to the retention of fluids in the tissues) is a know adverse reaction to Remeron. So he might want to try stopping the Remeron and seeing if the swelling goes away. But get him to go back on the Lantus first, so that you can isolate the cause.

Re: Problems with Lantus? Anyone??

Hi
Ihave a question for you blue. I am a newly dx diabetic. Sugar was at 561. I now have it under 120 most of the time. I also take prednisone for PMR(polymyalgia Rheumatic) Pred will take that sugar where no else dare to go.lol
As of last week I was put on Novolin also. I take novolog 2times a day and the novolin when I take my prednisone. 12 units. I also take 36 units of Lantus at night. My druggist doesn't understand why I take 2 different kinds of inuslin. Do any of you do this. The novolin was recommend by a endcrinologist. it is to off set the pred. When I get off the pred I will also get off the novolin. Now tho the pharmacist has me a bit worried.
Any info would be great.
Thanks
Anna

Re: Problems with Lantus? Anyone??

Reason why people take different types of insulin is due to the peak periods of each type. Lantus and Levemir are slow acting lasting 18-24 Novolog and Novolin are faster acting but have different peak periods, your doctors should have explained that to you. Seek out a diabetic clinic, they should have more answers

Re: Problems with Lantus? Anyone??

Not sure about swelling issue with Lantus, but my problem with anxiety issues, such as tightness in upper body, trouble breathing and fast pulse started after taking Lantus for 1 week then getting off of it for 2 wks now, but still having this problem. My sister also had same problem even after getting off of Lantus. My problem is a listed side affect, but don't know why it is lasting so long after stopping the drug???
