Huck,

Wondering why you haven't tried a diuretic? Fam

What do you mean by "intolerant of ACE inhibitors"... that they stopped working for you, or you received an allergic reaction... or what? Would you explain...?

Thanks.

Re: Anyone tried Avapro?

Fam

I take 80mg of Lasix probably 3 out of 5 days. I take it for fluid retention and never really consider the reduction in BP from the medicine. I need to do that and check my BP on a day that I take it.... It may go a bit too low and make me feel worse?

I really don't like Lasix due to side effects. One is that over the years, it can effect your hearing. I believe it has made my bad hearing worse

Also it seems the dose has to be increased, over time. That, I guess, is due either to a medical tolerance, or increased fluid retention.

It also removes lots of potassium. I take prescription potassium supplements, but I have to balance that with the fact that Avapro tends to increase potassium (I think). I do wonder about my potassium level though. I need to get a metabolic panel/test I think, to determine my electrolyte status.

Thanks much for your reply

Re: Anyone tried Avapro?

Huck,

I am so glad to hear you've finally found a cardiologist you feel you can trust. I read your posts on other boards so know what you're dealing with. I also appreciate the need to keep your blood pressure controlled.

I too have had to stop the calcium channel blockers. I have not had much success with any of the BP meds until now. Fam suggests the diuretics in a previous post. I can tell you they work! I was started on HCTZ a little more than a week ago to help get rid of swelling from the CCBs. Since then my blood pressure has been lower than I ever believed possible. The downside is that it might accelarate your heart rate - not good. I have to look into that because that's what I am experiencing. Also, it will increase your trigs as well as cholesterol. Was it you who could not tolerate the statins?
Aren''t you glad you travelled to CC and had the procedure done there by the experts? Not everyone gets that opportunity! You were in good hands! I wish you the best of luck with your stents and hope you'll find a way to keep that cholesterol and BP down! Why not get a consultation with a blood pressure specialist? Though he won't have a magic bullet, the BP fellow might have had a patient or two facing the exact same challenges as you. You'd be surprised how well these guys know their meds. He might have a trick or two up his sleeve. Worth a try! Also, have you looked into natural ways to lower blood pressure?

P.S. Not surprised your cardiologist nixed the CCBs!

VentureMan

I started the infamous ACEi side effect of coughing. I have also read that it is not uncommon for this to happen, i.e. to have taken the med for 3 years or more, before the side effect appears.

You're most welcome
