Re: high glucose levelsdriving me crazy

yes I take it before a meal but it won't go below 300 that is why I am on so much. like I can eat 1 scrambled egg and a slice of bacon and it still does not go down. that is my problem I can not get it to go down and I don't want to raise dosage anymore. I already have to take too many shots and if I have to take that much before each meal just to keep it at around 300 what is the use.

example of a typical days meals
breakfast
1 scrambled egg
1 piece of bacon

lunch
about 1 cup of fruit

baked chicken breast (skinless & boneless)
tomatoe slice
onion
green beans
1 small peice of cornbread

snack tonight might be about a cup of popcorn
I eat like this just about every day
that is why I can't figure out why they won't go down!

Re: high glucose levelsdriving me crazy

I'll start by saying that I am insulin sensitive, not resistant. But I find I require less insulin if I eat more fibre, and your diet seems very lacking in fibre. Have you thought about maybe making some sort of chilli? You could have lean ground meat, onion, tomatoe, and kidney beans (bit of carb but a lot of fibre). I remember reading years ago that fibre helped to increas insulin sensitivity.

Best of luck.

Re: high glucose levelsdriving me crazy

So you are taking injections before every time you eat? Depending on you weight, your lantus seems low. My 14 year old weighs about 230 pounds and he was on 50 units a day of lantus just before going on a pump last month. Also, have you checked for ketones? If you have ketones, your normal dosage will never work until you get them out. Do you see an endocrinologist or dr. regularly? You may do better to go on insulin to carb ratio rather than a set amount per day. You may also need oral meds (I forgot if you mentioned that or not).

Re: high glucose levelsdriving me crazy

I can't take oral meds. this may sound stupid but every since i had gallbladder surgery I have a problem with my bowels. I can eat something and 10 min. later I have to go potty. I was on glucophage 1000mg daily and about an hour after I would take my pills they come right back out. Dr. doesn't understand why I am so big. I don't either. We can't go out to eat I have to wait till I get home.

yes I take the lantus before each meal but majority of the time I just eat 1 time a day.

yes I have keytones in my urine. yes I go to dr. every 3 months just like they want me to. It does get hard because I don't have health insurance. It gets hard getting supplies. I can't afford the strips for my checker so I have to wait every 3 months to have it checked. It is hard enough getting the needles and insulin to take let alone the strips too. I just don't have the funding to do all of that. There are no state card for me, nothing. No help here what so ever so I do the best I can with what I have. Meds cost too much
mycardia
crestor
lantus
novolog
imidur
I could go on I can't afford half the stuff that they put you on.
what else can I do. I am doing the best I can

Re: high glucose levelsdriving me crazy

Don't feel bad about being big, I'm there myself. I feel your pain and I hope I can come up with some ideas for you. First of all, if you can get rid of the ketones, you won't need much insulin. I don't know if you know the process of doing that but my son has had several issues with it. To begin with, 4 years ago he had diabetic ketoacidosis and it nearly cost him his life. His sugar was 1700 in the ER. In your last post you said you took LANTUS with you meals, I hope that was a typo cause it doesn't work with food, only your background sugar. What kind of meter and strips do you use? Are you on syringes and vials or the pen with needles? I'm asking cause depending on what it is, my son has went on the pump in mid june and we have stuff laying around he won't be using. I've been regretting the day my son comes off our insurance (he's 14) cause its hard to buy all of this and I know it is. I see what the stuff costs without insurance and I'm thankful we have had it to be able to get at least his pump for him which is the only one insurance will help pay for at least 10 years.
