doxycycline stopped working?

I used to have terrible cystic acne that came on once a month and took forever to get rid of. I started using doxycycline and for the past year my acne completely disappeared. Now in the past month it has come back just like before. Have I built up a resistance to the medicine? I'm not sure where to go from here. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Re: doxycycline stopped working?

The same thing happened to me after ~1 year of Doxy. My derm switched me to Minocycline, which got my skin clear again within a few weeks.

How long have you been clear with the minocycline and what is your dosage? Thanks for responding!

Re: doxycycline stopped working?

This is exactly what happened to me when I took doxycycline. I went back in and my derm gave my another antibiotic and that has cleared me up for the past year.

The Mino kept me clear for another year or 2, but then I started a different acne treatment (Spironolactone) which worked wonders, so I didn't need the Mino anymore.

I took 100 mg twice daily. And IMO, it's much better than Doxy. I used to get really nauseas with Doxy, but no problems whatsoever with Mino.

Another idea is to add in a topical antibiotic to your regimen. My derm said that a topical antibiotic (such as clindamycin) + an oral antibiotic combination works better than just the oral.

Good luck
