Talking Re: insulin pumps

The very day my husband was told he had to go on the pump w/glucose readings of 350 , and she demonstrated it to us, we came home and our bitter melon and fenugreek had arrived on our doorstep. My husband INSTANTLY stopped drinking sodas and eating sugar, (he still eats honey and ice cream twice a month), took Actos as usual and today his glucose was 6.1. No exercise whatsoever, just Actos and those Indian herbs and this morning the dr said, "I wouldn't be surprised if you're cured in five years. Never heard of those herbs but keep doing what you're doing."
They've been using the herbs for THOUSANDS of years in India so they must be good for something Remember: it used to be called, "sugar diabetes."

Uhm, congrats, your husband as decently controlled type 2 diabetes. This is irrelevant to most people considering a pump since 90% of pumpers have type 1. There currently is no cure for either type of diabetes.

I have always been told there's no cure, too. I'm just reporting what the doctor said. People raised in the USA are going to be told and thus believe what they've been told here ; but in other countries they often say different things. A certified physician's assistant friend of mine told me that if doctors here even MENTION herbs they will lose their licenses, regardless of whether they work or not. They must stick to their protocol at all times and just prescribe.

Re: insulin pumps

Sorry. I meant his glucose was 79, A1C was 6.1. Diagnosed 2001 type 2.
Decently controlled .

SusanGene,
I am truly happy for your husband that he's been able to achieve such great control, but since you mentioned that the day the herbs arrived he IMMEDIATELY stopped drinking soda and eating sugar, it's difficult to tell if his improved numbers are due to the bitter melon and fenugreek or his much improved diet!

At any rate, the poster is pretty obviously a Type1 diabetic (hypo unawareness, etc.), and a T1 without insulin would die in a very short time.

Even T2's cannot all be controlled in the same way. T2 is a combination of two things...insulin resistance and decreased insulin production. Some people have mostly resistance, but close to normal insulin production. Some people have greatly reduced production even by the time of diagnosis...and those dead insulin-producing cells will NOT regenerate themselves. And in some people, no matter how much they diet and exercise and use herbs, their insulin production will continue to decrease, although that decrease can certainly be slowed greatly by proper management.

I certainly hope and pray that your husband's numbers continue to be good and that whatever is working...whether it be diet or the herbs...his T2 diabetes does not progress further.

Ruth
