Re: Confused about what to eat
Hi Young guy19 - sorry I had to call you that. lol
Yes, actually alcohol does tend to lower sugar levels to some extent. But having said that, don't take that as a green flag for drinking more
You could try eating something like porridge, which absorbs into the blood stream slowly, and will help keep your levels more stable...

My glucose levels remain around 170 in the morning, except for one morning after I had 3 beers the night before. That morning it was 157, so I thought it was coming down. Has anyone else experienced a glucose-lowering effect with beer? A friend who also has diabetes said she had heard that the carbohydrates in beer affect glucose levels differently than other carbohydrates.

Alcohol can lower blood sugar before the carbs in the alcohol (like in beer) can bring it back up, so you should be careful about going low when you drink. Of course it is not a "fix" to keep your sugar lower. As I said before - make sure you enjoy your life, so don't worry about having a beer on occasion or once in a while (again, not too often) having a yummy dessert.
The addition of the Actos should help to bring down your glucose levels. Do you know what your a1c is? The fasting of 170 isn't great, but it's not that bad either.
Best of luck to you and welcome to our little community. I look forward to hearing from you. While you may not have a lot of diabetes experience, I'm sure you've got a lot of other experience that will be a great addition here.

Hi SG. Just curious what you mean by "payoffs". It was never really called "sugar diabetes" by anyone except lay people who didn't know much about it. Otherwise it was always called either juvenile onset or adult onset, until they realized that you could get the "juvenile" when you were oldguy's age. And you certainly couldn't call it something like "senility onset", now could you? That would be rude and silly. LOL That's why they call it Type 1 and Type 2 now. Or T1.5 if you get T1 when you are much older.

Re: Confused about what to eat
hi.im new to this forum and am trying to learn all i can about this.my mom just had a severe episode and was found unconsious with a low blood suger level of 19.ive never been more scared in my life when i could not wake her that morning.,the doctor said it was because she hadnt eatin anything before bed, even 2 small cookies would have made it not happen.with type 2 it is VERY important that u eat 3 meals a day and a snack before bed.to keep your levels up during sleep. here is a sample idea that u can start with. it is all in the carbs u eat.each meal should contain anywhere from 30 to 60 carbs ,not to exceed 70 or under 30.and a snack 2 hours before bed between 15-30 carbs.its very important to read labels!if it has anything ending in "tol" it is ussually a suger alcohal and u take that number, cut it in half and add it to the carb number and that is your net carb for that item.its all about carbs. of course, everyone is different and you might need more or less carbs and your doctor and dietition can help u with a menu specified just for u.ive found out that a good support system from heath care providers, family and friends is extremly helpful. i wish u well and hope this helped a little, take care!

That is just awful what the two of you had to go through. What medications is she taking? My husband is 66 and has never counted anything, won't count anything and doesn't know what a "carb" is. He takes medication, herbs and does not eat sugar and his numbers are normal without doing any math. She needs to see another dr. who will MORE THAN LIKELY DEFINITELY CHANGE her meds if she's on any. Or at least he will increase her dosages. It is almost Impossible to see a second doctor without him changing medications. I'll be thinking of both of you today . SG
