New here...writing for my daughter who has GERD. Need some input

Hello.....

My 35 year old daughter went to the ER yesterday after suffering sharp, stabbing pains on the left side of her chest. They did an EKG and chest x-ray, which were both negative. Prior to this incident yesterday, she's been experiencing ear pain, a feeling of a "lump" at the back of her throat, problems swallowing sometimes and, strangely, she cannot yell. She was at a concert a couple of weeks ago and tried yelling out loud, and couldn't!

She obviously needs scoped to see what's happening in there...and is making an appt. tomorrow. Am wondering if she should start some sort of medicine, though, first. She's been taking OTC Prilosec with no positive results.

Please....anyone with similar symptoms....what meds did you take to heal possible errosions?

Thank you so much for any input......

Linda

Re: New here...writing for my daughter who has GERD. Need some input

It definitely sounds like GERD or LPR. Sounds more like LPR to me though. I have LPR and Ive had all those symptoms. Im on prilosec and it helps me a little but I need something different. How long has she been taking it? Has she changed her diet at all? That would help. She does need a scope to see whats going on and if it is reflux then she will have to try different meds to see what works the best for her, prilosec, nexium, zantac etc..

She needs to raise her bed up a few inches and not eat or drink after 6pm. She needs to eat "approved foods" also. No spicy foods or anything.

If your daughter is going to be scoped, it's probably best not to take anything. You don't want to "cure" it before the doctor can see it.

However, if she's really miserable the Prilosec OTC is the best but she might need two per day. You could also use Zantac or Pepcid at the higher doses.

36yr old male, here. Have had the same sharp pains in the chest, mid and left side. Lump in throat. Been to the ER 4 or 5 times in the last 2 years. Had the EKG, x-ray, nuclear stress test, etc...all normal. Was Dx'ed with GERD this past January.

Doc put me on nexium 1/day, A.M. dose. After 3+ months my symptoms were still present so went back to doc and he asked me to also take OTC Zantac150. 2-3 weeks later, the majority of my chest pains were gone. I still have chest uncomfortableness, but nothing compared to what I did have.

Had my EGD done about 2 weeks ago and am waiting for my biopsy results.

Hopefully things are healing in there.
