add meds/upset stomach

My dd has a terrible time with upset stomach with add meds. She does have a sensitive stomach and is not a big breakfast eater. On some, she has thrown up 30 mins later. Others she has felt like she was going to to for the most part of the day. Also, they often make her extremely tired.

Do any of you have any tips for this problem? Anyone else's child tired?

Re: add meds/upset stomach

Vomiting, diarrhoea and cramps are fairly common stimulant (Ritalin, Adderall, etc) side effects.

Too high of a dose may appear as tiredness. Does daughter fall asleep because of her ADHD meds? If not suspect the dose is too high or the delivery system is ineffective.

If I were to take 60mg methylphenidate IR, shortly after I would appear very tired but in fact am experiencing the so-called zombie effect produced by overfocus. Whereas even 70mg of methylphenidate in a extended release formula such as Concerta does not affect me that way. But even an extended release formula can produce the appearance of tiredness if the dose is too high.

Med management (drug, dose, delivery) of ADHD symptoms is very unique to each individual. Children are often unable to explain their reaction. Doctors depend on parents for feedback.

Is she on Strattera??? If so, give it to her at bedtime to minimize the upset stomach and fatigue.

Look into probiotic or Activia (yogurt).
It may make her feel better.

Re: add meds/upset stomach

hi....

what kind of add drug is she on?
is she on strattera or an amphetamine?

if its strattera then tiredness is definetly a side effect...when i was on it my doc told me to take it at night before bed at a regular time...that really helped...

as well...if its amphetamine, upset stomach is the norm. i feel quite nauseous for the first few hours and have intense diareha and cramping. what i find helps me (im on adderall, and was on dexedrine for a long time) is that i set my alarm and take the pill an hour before i wake up, with a big glass of water and a piece of toast (i know it sounds wierd, but i keep them by my bedside table and prepare them the night before), then i go back to sleep for an hour. by the time i get out of bed, i feel much more rested and relaxed and I have to go to the bathroom, but its not so painful.

in general, eating about half hour before taking the pill will help with upset stomach problems, but eating very very small portions. and drinking water in sips helps with cramping.
also, maybe the dose is too high...how old is your daughter?
im 22 and have been on and off adhd drugs since i was 12...
