Insulin ???

I am on R & N in the morning and R before supper and N at night. My blood sugars are high in the morning but low in the evening. I know Lantus does not work for 24 hours so you really need 2 shots of Lantus. R does not work good with Lantus so does anyone use Lipsro with Lantus. I asked my Dr about that and he said that would not help. He wants me on the pump but I think that is a waste of money and I would hate a pump and I refused to get on one.

Well, I have to say that you've got a lot of assumptions going on there. First of all, Lantus does not always work for 24 hours in some people, but in many people it does. You have to try it to find out if it does or it does not. I have a number of friends that only take lantus (and some take levemir) once per day and it works fine.

I used to feel the same way you do about a pump. But after my kidney transplant (and unfortunately you'll be in my shoes if you don't have good blood sugars) I decided to go on one. Not because I wanted to, but because I wanted my new kidney to last as long as possible and I needed tighter control for that. Amazingly enough, I love my pump. It allows so much more freedom. Especially since you are restricted in your eating amounts and time because of the peaks in N and R, you would find the pump particularly liberating. As far as being "attached" to something all the time, I find it is less annoying than wearing glasses. At least my pump doesn't fog up when I come in from the cold.

Basically, if you want to get better control, I think you need to be a bit more open minded, try what's out there, and see what happens. I know of people that use lispro with lantus and they do get better control. Lispro peaks at about the same time as the carbs you ate (about 2 hours) so you get a closer match than with the R (peaks in 4).

Best of luck to you.

Re: Insulin ???

I have tried Lantus. At about 18 to 20 hours my BS would go way up. So I know it does not work for 24 hours. About the pump no way. I would never sleep and I know it is for some people but I am not one of them.
