Prilosec and depression

I have been taking Prilosec OTC for two months and I'm starting to think it's making my depression a lot worse. My mother says she noticed changes in me one month ago. I only noticed changes two weeks ago and that's because something happened that caused an extreme amount of anxiety and anger and still continues to do so. I have tried "getting over" this situation as I have in the past but I just get more upset. I'm thinking that perhaps it's the Prilosec making me feel this way, especially since I'm not taking anything for the depression.

Has anyone experienced problems like this from Prilosec? I took it years ago with no problems but I think I only took it for a month and my depression wasn't as bad then. If I have to stop taking it I'm going to be screwed since I don't have health insurance and can't afford to see a doctor.

Re: Prilosec and depression

Hi, lb --

I'm on Zegerid which is the prescription form of Prilosec, same ingredient but doubled and with sodium bicarb added. I'm usually prone to depression but haven't been feeling depressed at all since I started taking it about two months ago. Just my two cents for what it's worth. Also haven't seen depression listed as a side effect anywhere.

That's not to discount your experience at all! You might have to try getting off of it to see what would happen. These PPIs are weird. I know when I was on Nexium and tried to double my dosage, I started having horrible nightmares, the kind where you wake up screaming because you think your husband's trying to kill you! Whereas he was actually sleeping innocently beside me and woke up totally bewildered by my accusations ...

Hope you figure out the right balance for you.

Re: Prilosec and depression

Hi

I am on omeprazole form of Prilosec. I do not have nitemares, thank goodness. That must be horrible.

I do have depression though. But I do not know if it is from Prilosec or other meds I take. I have different kinds of Epilectsy meds and one kind of Type 2 Diabetes with one med.

Love Ruth

Re: Prilosec and depression

I am on Prilosec and Zantac and have definitely been very anxious and slightly depressed. I've been on it for almost 3 months now. I've considered stopping it several times, but I'm afraid to lose all of the progress I've made in treating my LPR. I'm trying to "stick it out" on the Prilosec, but I'm feeling like I need an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety med. However, I don't want to start one of those because my problem might be caused by the Prilosec! I'm stuck in a bad situation. I need to wait until I'm off of the meds. I've never been depressed in my life and this is horrible! I've got 4 wonderful kids, a great husband, a great job and a new home...life couldn't be better and yet I feel very "blah" and have had several panic attacks (which I have had in the past).

Re: Prilosec and depression

Have you ever thought we might get depressed from being sick and having to take the meds? I've never heard or read where they cause depression (except for Reglan) but I know I sure feel depressed when I start having issues with GERD/LPR stuff. If some of you have only been taking them a few months, I'm sure you're not well yet so this alone can make you feel bad, which can make you (or it does me) feel depressed. Hey, I even take antidepressants and I can still get upset over this stuff. I'd try to continue your meds until your Dr. says otherwise. Hope you all get to feeling well and "happy" soon!
