Re: Am I a diabetic or still Pre?

I agree with Mark...an A1c of 7.0 would seem to indicate that you are definitely diabetic. However, at this point, you may be able to manage with diet and exercise. Even a modest weight loss (10 pounds) might actually bring your levels down.

For diabetics, the advice most often given is to keep the A1c at 7.0 or below; however, most of us aim for 6.5 or below. It is a documented fact that the closer to normal one can keep one's blood sugar levels, the less the risk of complications.

Most non-diabetics will have A1c's in the 4.0 to 5.5 range.

My own personal feeling is that the sooner you take charge of managing your numbers and working towards tight control, the better.

Re: Am I a diabetic or still Pre?

I guess I am prediabetic. I am really not sure about all of this my fasting blood sugar was 117 yesterday and today. It has been as high as 143 last year and I didn't even realize there was a problem until my heart doctor brought it up at my last appointment.
I'm just starting with doctors as of yesterday. She mentioned they may have to put me on a pill something I really don't want to take. I'm wondering if most people end up with meds when the blood sugar is at 117.
What is A1C?

Re: Am I a diabetic or still Pre?

When I was diagnosed last December, my Fasting was around 120 and my
A1C was 6.8. And they put me on avandia 2/2. And it really did help. They did it because prediabetes needs to be controlled in the early stages so that when the diabetes does progress it is easier for you to take care of it. Since then mine has progressed pretty fast, due to the complications that Avandia presented my Doctor took me off of that, I now take 4mg of Amaryl and 500mg of Metformin twice daily, and I give myself a 5 unit shot every night of Levimere. So if I were you I wouldn't be hesitant to start the medicine because of the complications that can arise evne from prediabetes.

Re: Am I a diabetic or still Pre?

Abby423...I guess your right. I have a bad heart and I take so many pills now I don't mean just two or three but about 20 a day. I started taking all of these pills in 1983 my stomach is a mess from all of this so I just hate adding another med and I don't ajust well to new meds. \
I don't know why I ended up with this there is no diabetes in our family. At the time I had my heart attacks at age 38 there was also no heart attacks in our family. Who knew all of this was going to happen. I'll deal with it I did with my heart and I will with this.
My eyes have really been giving me trouble and maybe this is why.
I did take my blood sugar last night and it was 148.
