asthma worse during night

Hi everyone

I have had very mild asthma for 11 years now after a bout of pneumonia and have only had to use my reliever inhaler now and again over that time.

However, about 8 months ago, my chest started to tighten on a regular basis and I started to cough all the time. I have been on pulmicort two puffs, morning and night, but still have to use my blue inhaler. Is it ok to up the dosage to three puffs morning and night when I am feeling worse?

Also why is my asthma worse at night time. Is it because I am lying down? I try and prop myself up with pillows but it doesn't help.

Maybe it is allergies from my bedding, do these anti allergy pillows etc really work?

Does anyone suffer from tingling lips when their chest is tight and what does this mean?

I am sorry to ask so many questions but all this is very scary stuff and terrifies the life out of me! Any replies greatly appreciated.

Take care.

Mac2

I wouldn't up my dosage without checking with my doctor. As for the nightime issue, you might try allergy proofing your bed - bag the mattress and pillow, wash sheets in hot water, etc. You might also try a benedryl at bedtime. If it's allergies causing the problem, the antihistamine might help - and it'll make you sleepy as well.

Re: asthma worse during night

I agree with Titchou, you shouldn't alter your dosage without consulting your physician.

My daughter has asthma, and one of her many triggers is dust mites. Here is what her allergy/asthma specialist told me:

Buy dust mite proof mattress covers, use one on the box springs too, and one for the pillow. It needs to state it works on dust mites, they are very tiny. Once you zip them on, don't take them off.
Wash all bed linens weekly in hot water, at least 130 degrees, preferably 140.
Vacuum the mattress and pillow covers when you launder the linens.
Vacuum the floors weekly if you have carpeting in your bedroom.
Remove anything near your bed that could harbor mites, such as stuffed animals or clothing.
A room dehumidifier may help as well. They thrive in humid conditions. (I wouldn't purchase one however, unless you know mites are a factor)
If you have drapes/curtains hanging near the bed, clean them as well.

As you already know, the only way to know for certain that dust mites are a trigger for you, is to undergo allergy testing. We were told however, that dust mites are one of the most common triggers of allergic asthma.

I followed all of the above advice (except for the dehumidifier, we found we didn't need it) and my daughter's night time symptoms are nearly non-existent now.

Singular taken at bedtime also has helped many with nighttime problems. You should talk with your Dr.

Hope this helps some,
Shea

Re: asthma worse during night

Hi

Thanks for your replies.

Could I just ask Shea, what is singular? I am from the UK so haven't heard this before!

Thank you for all your advice and I have already purchased the hyperallergenic pilllows and used them last night but it was no different. Myabe not as bad as some nights but still tightness in my chest. I will now get some of the covers for the mattress and see if that helps.

I forgot to mention in my post that when I do wake up my eyes sting and are watery so I suppose that points to allergies. Does this happen with your daughter being allergic to dust mites? Also, the time of year doesn't help, here in the UK weatherwise it has been quite cold and that is a trigger for me.

Titchou, I already take benadryl, but take it in the morning when waking.

Thanks for your help

Re: asthma worse during night

It's Singulair not Singular. And I believe it's called Montelukast in Great Britain. You also might try switching the benedryl to bedtime instead of in the AM. You can always take another in the morning if you need but generic benedryl is quite cheap - much cheaper than Singulair...though I don't know how drugs are handled on your NHS....
