Re: Asthma in the upper respiratory tract

Hi,

I am kind of new here - been reading this fantastic board for weeks, but have only started posting. I've had "mild" asthma for over 20 years, but was diagnosed only 5 years ago.

Anyway, my throat is always tickly - yes, tons of allergies. I have sugar-free menthol cough drops all over the house. I probably suck a couple a day to relieve the tickle that leads to coughing. There's even a new cough "ball" - tiny - called "Burst" that is a just-right amount of menthol to soothe my cough.

Maybe it'll help you a little???

Re: Asthma in the upper respiratory tract

Hi Ya'll.....

When you talk about 'upper' - I'm assuming you're talking about the throat?

Long story short.... I've had chest tightness and anxiety type burning feelings in chest. I'm still in the process of finding *what works* for me...(under pulmonary specialist prescriptions/care).
I took Advair for almost 3 months and now I'm off Advair and on Singulair (Been on Allegra D at night for many years). The Advair helped but my throat got weird after a while.
I've been on Singulair for about 2 weeks and now my throat is weird again. Weird as in....feels like a lump in my throat in & around my adams apple.
I don't cough... I don't wheeze...I don't have trouble breathing either.

I've had allergies all my life but never had an allergy that affected my throat like this - How do you even know its an allergy to something? versus being something else? Is this typical of a food/eating allergy? Or...??

I see the pulmonary specialist this Thursday for a follow-up appointment since he's prescribed Singulair...... Any hints or tips I can try to point him in any directions to help me diagnose this throat thing?

Thanks in Advance!

I have kept things under control for the last several years with Allegra-D and Singulair, but no inhaler of any sort.

The only time I'm ever short of breath is when I have a really huge coughing jag or laugh a lot - in both cases I have a more difficult time catching my breath. But it's never anything like what I think of when I think asthma.

I do occasionally have very slight wheezing and some chest tightness, but again, the symptoms are so light, I don't break out the albuterol.

I think I'll spend some more time looking at GERD before my appointment tomorrow.

Thanks again,
Kimberly
Hello Kimberly and all,

My granddaughter has this kind of asthma also. Her doctor calls her a cougher. She has been on prednisone off and on for almost a year and a half, but the small airway constriction is still there. She's on just about EVERY medication you can name (flovent, foradil, singulair/10 mg., nasonex, allegra/180 mg., xopenex, and a new decongestant that I can't remember the name of, allergy shots, mucinex/when needed), along with constant rounds of antibiotics. Like you all, her asthma only acts up when she catches an upper respiratory (cold, flu) and it goes into sinusitus. We've been fighting this for almost 2 years now. She's been taking so much prednisone that she now has adrenal insufficiency. However, we did find out that she has developed new allergies (dog, mold/alternaria, and gerbil). Since NOTHING seems to help anymore, we (her doctor and I) have decided to start Xolair shots. I pray this will help. If not, then we'll stop these shots and change her allergy serum to include dog, tear up the carpet, and get the ducts cleaned. Have any of you tried theophylline(sp?). If so, what were your experiences? Thanks.
