side effects to Antihistamine - fits and tongue thrusting

My 10-month old baby is having serious side effects from taking Promethazine (prescribed by a doctor who is not aware that Promethazine should not be given to infants below 2 years). She has fits and tongue thrusting. She has since seen a neuro, and her MRI and EEG results are normal.

However, it has been a month since she stopped taking Promethazine and her tongue is still thrusting out very frequently. Does anybody has similar experience? Is there anything I can do to help my baby? And how long does it take for the side effects to fully go away?

Re: side effects to Antihistamine - fits and tongue thrusting

what do you mean by "she's having fits"? could you describe her behavior?

is it possible that the tongue thrusting isn't due to the promethazine? i know my niece and nephew both went through a tongue thrusting around 9-11 months old because they were cutting teeth and i think it was just weird feeling to them. is it possible the tongue thrusting is due to teething and maybe it is coincidentally happening at the same time she took promethazine?

Re: side effects to Antihistamine - fits and tongue thrusting

When she is having fits, her head will tilt to her right side, her right arm will jerk straight and twist, and her tongue will thrust out to the right. All this happen very fast at split second, and she will be temporary dazed and need a few second to recover. We managed to video taped an episode and the neuro confirmed it is a fit.

Now, her head tilts and arm twisting have more or less tapered down. But her tongue still sticks out very frequently. She could be doing something, like eating her cereal happily, and suddenly her tongue will stick out causing all her cereal that is in her mouth to drip out. Or she could be babbling happily, and then stopped suddenly and her tongue will stick out. Does not appear normal to us. Is it the same for your niece and nephew? Do they suddenly thrust their tongue in the midst of doing something?
