Re: Does any have addisons and graves disease??

I have both Addison's and Graves as well as lupus and other autoimmune problems. I have been on PTU for the Graves for close to 4 years now and every time I've tried to go off I've gone hyper very quickly. Just had my TSI levels tested again last month and they are still very high so I don't plan on going off the meds any time soon. When the thyroid is hyper it greatly speeds up the metabolism and I was burning through the steroids way too quickly and I ended up in adrenal crisis. Make sure your child is getting enough steroids. I felt awful. I currently take 15 mg of Pred a day which I realize is a high dose for Addison's, but with the lupus and stuff my body has become extremely touchy and I haven't been able to get the Addison's under control. I also have Graves Eye Disease, which if your daughter has, she needs to be monitored by an ophalmologist. If you have any questions, let me know. --Jenn G.

Re: Does any have addisons and graves disease??

I have both and the old term for it is called Schmidts Syndrome. I was diagnosed with Graves after my last child was born so my thyroid was eradicated with radioactive iodine. I don't know if this is still true but back in 1983 they wanted me to have had all of the children I wanted before they would give me the radiation. I am on synthroid, cortef, florinef and evista for my osteoporosis. I just wanted you to know that there are other people out there that have this and it is a real trial if you live in a small out of the way place like I do. I have to drive 120 miles to an endo but it is worth the drive as most general practitioners don't know about this disease. I hope you have a pediatric endocrinologist to take your child to. Good luck!

My daughter is 13 and has had Graves for awhile now but was diagnosed last week with Addison's Disease. She is on ten pills a day. We also jut recently did a radiation treatment for her thyroid and it made Addisons show up strongly.

Re: Does any have addisons and graves disease??

I too have grave and addison's. My belief is the excessive strain on the body from the antibodies causes other things especially unusual strain on the adrenals and other parts. i had my thyroid removed, went through horrid syptoms on sythroid but it turns it out was adrenal and the lack of treatment plus a head injury mad me a wreck.

I also want to point out, correct me if I'm wrong, but I have heard to test for the aldosterone/renin it must be done on women the first 7 days of their cycle. I read somewhere the peak of progesterone causes unusually high aldosterone as a false value.

Also remember that radiation treatment causes a huge surge of antibodies that can cause other problems. I had surgery because I had eye issues with the graves and radiation can cause the excessive antibody purge to attach the eyes.

As far as the meds, I found the easiest way even for me to take meds is to buy those mini plastic baggies from a craft or fabric store-I mark times on them and dates and set my cell to continually beep when I need to take them. Just an idea.

By the way you guys are great!
