Ichthyosis (skin problem) in 2 year old

Has anyone had to battle this with their small children? My 2 1/2 year old has Ichthyosis, eczema, and keratosis. It's great! lol. We've been to see a pediatric dermatologist and still don't have the relief that I expected. Any suggestions would be great!

Re: Ichthyosis (skin problem) in 2 year old

hi aelliot, jacob hasnt had the other conditions you stated but he has had severe eczema from head to toe since he was about 10 weeks old\(hes now just over 7 months) he was even hospitalized due to an infected eye caused by the infected eczema on his face, im sorry i dont have any suggestions for you but i was just curious as to what happened and what was said when you saw the ped dermatologist as we have an appt for ds on wednesday, i want to suggest allergy testing for him as it clears up when he his on the steriod cream (at least until he gets used to it and it stops working) but as soon as we stop it gets really bad again, it just feels like an uphill struggle to get it under control

Wow, that is quite a handful. My husband has ichthyosis (but not excema or keratosis) and what has worked best for him is otc acne medication (salacilic acid). it is quite safe and if you keep at is 1 or 2 x a day it clears right up. he says it does not burn or sting, but it might if you apply over the areas with excema. Good luck.

It is a huge struggle! We were prescribed Elidel, but it burned him, so we had to stop. The steroid creams don't really do anything and the Acid Mantel cream only helps a little. His legs still feel like bumpy leather. We go back in January, so I'll see what they say then. They did prescribe Derma Smooth for his head, and it seems to be doing a good job on his scalp. That used to be horrible!

another thing to maybe try (with doc permission) is light therapy. One thing that ALWAYS helps clear up dh is the summer, when his legs get alot more light. (and you'll find that in the research the condition does get better in the summer). I encourage you to (g) oogle it, I think you'll find some interesting info out there. And my dh has lived with it his whole life, other than cosmetics, it doesn't really bother him, so at least as far as the ich goes it doesn't really NEED to be treated, unless it is sore.
