What's your favorite medicine?

It finally occurs to me that perhaps you good people could help me with a difficulty I am facing in terms of my medicine. I feel like a major neurotic when I write all of this down, but here goes.

I have, in the past, taken stimulants to help with my ADD. They help. I take 2.5mg of dexedrine, I can concentrate for a few hours. It's a good thing.

On the down side, I rebound horribly. I turn into either a total space cadet or an overgrown toddler once it wears off. And, if I take it less than 14 hours before bedtime, I don't sleep. Oh, and then sometimes I skip meals, because in the complete absence of appetite, I can't make myself eat.

It's possible the side effects would get somewhat better if it took it regularly instead of only when I have something extremely difficult and important to do, but I can't imagine putting up with it that long. I can't bear the thought of being a crazy person every night when my sweetie gets home for days or weeks on end.

Also, I'd like to be able to focus in the afternoons sometimes, but I can't take the dexedrine that late in the day.

A few years ago, I didn't have this much trouble with my medicine!

I still have that free sample of Strattera lying around. Does that work for anyone?

Jane,

They all suck.

For me it's meds/work/money or no meds/no work/no money. I choose plan A.

Re: What's your favorite medicine?

Strattera is my favorite. Only problem is, last time I took it, it quit working after a year. I then switched to Adderall XR and occasionally Ritalin. While those worked, I had to take something to calm me down - it made my system race.

Strattera levels out my mind, I'm calm as a cucumber, curbs my appetite, and overall works great for me. My husband loves me on Strattera - without medication for my ADHD, I am wound up and highly frustrated most of the time.

This time around, I've been on it a little over a month and very happy.

Re: What's your favorite medicine?

janewhite1,

I take generic Ritalin. I am fortunate to have found something that works for me with few side effects.

It doesn't decrease my appetite -- in fact, it increases my metabolism, causing quicker blood-sugar drops, so I have to eat often enough to keep my blood sugar stable without tooooo many extra calories.

I also don't have a rebound effect when it wears off. I just start gradually noticing that I'm getting frazzled again, and then I decide if I'm going to be busy enough to make it worth while to take a second pill.

Side effects do cause us to weigh the advantages vs the disadvantages. I hope that you find something that works for you.

Re: What's your favorite medicine?

I hate to agree with addprogrammer but for the couple of years I've been taking Adderol XR, I have noticed a lack of appetite, and a very spacey and irritable mood as it wears off. I don't take it everyday. The main reason is the stomach pains. Any thoughts?
