Goldy,
In my experience, doctors don't seem too concerned about the edema. I sometimes get nasty peripheral edema. When it first began, I'd have swollen feet & ankles. Some time later I started retaining fluid in my legs. Then in my abdomen as well. I feared the fluids would start accumulating in my lungs as I was also experiencing a severe shortness of breath. I asked my doctor if this could possibly happen and the answer was yes. It hasn't so far.
I was given a huge dose of diuretics (which, I have since read, are often ineffective). They seemed to help. I am told the edema could be of cardiological origin but is most likely from the medication I am on. My meds include a max dose of a calcium channel blocker, as well as a beta blocker. It is possible that your edema is a direct result of your taking multiple medications. Some meds cause us to retain sodium and water. When our plasma levels increase, fluid leaks from the smallest blood vessels - capillaries - into the surrounding tissues. I don't know of any way to keep edema from happening except to stop taking the offending medications, or reduce the dosage. Unfortunately, discontinuing the meds is not an option for some of us.
The best way to treat the swelling is by restricting your sodium intake and physical activity (if possible). Have your electrolytes checked frequently.
Good luck with your treatment and pain management!
