Re: PPI Stomach Pains

Bad episode last night. Had champagne and a glass of wine ( I know bad but heck it was New Years eve) and sure enough the acid kicked in right after dinner. I was eating a salad and felt it slide down yet I had steak and potatos as the entree and had no problems getting that down. It just does not make sense....Like I said before the acid only started happening after starting the ppi's. I am thinking of quitting cold turkey the ppi's to see what happens because the acid is terrible....

Re: PPI Stomach Pains

I too could swear I was much BETTER before starting the PPIs. As a matter of fact, the only problem I had then was nausea. I seem to have every symptom there is now, INCLUDING the nausea (to a lesser degree). It sure makes me wonder.

PS. Had the same food last night - steak, lobster, potatoes, wine and champagne. Wine bothers me now. Water is the safest and healthiest liquid to drink.

Unhappy Re: PPI Stomach Pains

Hello ALL -- I am so grateful that I have found this site. I was started on Prilosec OTC for GERD and a suspected Hiatal Hernia 12/12/07. I was having breathing/tightness (around my lower back and stomach) issues that I felt were from the HBP medication that my Dr. had me on (Torprol XL) -- instead of taking me off that he said that the pain was GERD and suspected hiatal hernia (though I had never really suffered from heatburn - occassinal burning after too much coffee or spicy food - but rare???) -- and so told me start Prilosec.

The first 5 days were amazing!!! I had no tightness or breathing problems -- then BAM -- a DIFFERENT TIGHTNESS BEGAN -- within an hour of eating I would get tightness in my upper stomach and upper chest and back -- almost like someone was grabbing my throat with their fist and trying to pull it out. It would get worse with each meal -- being the WORST after dinner and all throughout the night -- it would actually keep me up for hours at night. The tightness gets so bad at times that I feel like I cannot breath and am suffocating???

I tried twice to stop taking it - I would do okay for 1-2 days then the tightness would come on with a venegence - and the acide would be HORRIFIC. I tried taking Pepcid AC to help but it was not enough. So I went back on it and have tried to cut out all the bad foods -- I eat a low fat diet, NO SODA NO CHOCOLATE NO PIZZA NO ALCOHOL and only (1) cup of coffee in the morning. I am 5'3 and only weigh 135 - I watch what I eat and am an active mother of two, I do not smoke or drink - but do not work out regularly. I suffer from genetic HBP and asthma which the Dr. thinks is caused by GERD.....

Well the upper chest tightness got so awful that I quit again -- I am now on my third day and the chest tightness is WORSE THAN EVER -- that fist grabbing feeling started @ 1:13am and has not stopped - at times making me feel like I am suffocating - I tried my Albuterol resuce inhaler and it did NOTHING.... I am wondering how long it takes to get this stuff out of your body??? I took a total of 18 pills.... I am scared.....And so worried -- I wanted the Prilosec to help and make me feel better, instead I feel just as bad with all new problems??? HELP!

Re: PPI Stomach Pains

Hi again! Day # 4 with no PPI and it has been difficult. I was up almost all evening with breathing problems that continued into today. The chest tightness moved from my throat to down around my stomach front and back making me feel like I was being SQUEEZED to death and severe difficulty breathing. Also my nose is congested today, I feel at times like someone has their hand over my nose and mouth - called my Dr. and asked for an antibiotic because I just got done nursing my boys through some nasty colds (bad coughs and stuffy noses) - so I was worried that I might me catching that on top of the PPI withdrawl. I feel very 'congested' and 'tight' today - different than yesterday. I just want to feel better - and I want to be able to tell what the PPI was doing to me....

One thing I know for sure - since I stopped taking the PPI no more severe tightness in my stomach after eating, still a little in my upper chest after eating but not as bad as when taking the Prilosec and less dizzy - so that is something.

Anyone else have withdrawl going off a PPI??? - thank you!!!

This is such an ordeal - I feel so discouraged I need the stron PPI to block the horrid gastro side effects from my HBP med until they can find a new one that works for me - but the side effects form the PPI are just as bad in a different way.

Re: PPI Stomach Pains

Can anyone explain what is wrong with all of us? Why is this happening? Is it food additives, meat, dairy or what???

I am so ready to solve this problem. I may become a vegan.
