Re: Antihypertensives and cholesterol levels

In addition to my HBP, my total cholesterol and triglycerides were elevated. I've had significant weight loss through diet and exercise which have helped with my BP but had more dramatic effects on cholesterol levels
I assume you posted your cholesterol levels on the cholesterol board?
It's good to hear the lifestyle changes have greatly improved your cholesterol levels as well as your blood pressure readings. We need to hear success stories to feel motivated!

I will try my best modify my diet further, exercise and hope for similar results. I feel so relieved I won't have to be taking a higher dose of Lipitor (at least for now) and risk more side effects. I was told that what I eat is more important right now than the exercise. I was also told to resume walking. At this point I'll do anything just so I don't have to take more meds. I know I can make a couple of adjustments to my diet - less bread and yogurt, more celery, carrots and similar treats - and see how that goes. Actually, I eat one red pepper every day for lunch because I like the way it tastes. Some of the veggies are not that bad. I plan to do some exercises tonight - maybe some resistance & some on a machine.

Thank you guys for your suggestions, you were right on!

FG, I did but I'll put them into this thread. "Beerzoids" and a poster on the cholesterol board "Cobaltblue" have offered excellent chronicles of their journey to respectable health. I really enjoy the wealth of anecdotal evidence here but I also find it useful to read specific things. Of course, we have to do this in the context of privacy and avoiding voyeurism.

On 10/29/07 my lipids were: TriG-262, TCh-270, HDL-37,LDL-181, Glucose-107.

On 12/10/07, #'s were: TriG-117, TCh-164,HDL-39, LDL-102, Glucose -93.

On 10/29 my in office BP was 180 /130 (Initial Lotrel dose of 5/20 upped to 10/40 after 5 days)

On 12/10 in office BP reading was 130 / 79.

My weight went from 266 to 246 and presently is around 238-240. I should add that at my first office visit, I was also prescribed 40MG of Pravachol. After the 2nd results, the Dr. stated that he believed the biggest impact of the statin was on LDL and the rest was mainly diet and exercise.

From a dietary standpoint, I basically followed a glycemic index outline for the foods I consume and limit my daily caloric intake to between 1600-1800 calories per day. Eliminating the most glaring refined carbohydrates was an effort at first but I've discovered that certain cravings I always had are diminished significantly or gone. I have to watch out for a "reflexive" eating pattern though - where I'd just keep eating as if it were a task of sorts.

My daily exercise regimen consists of a 3 mile jog and 1.6 mile brisk walk.

For me, the biggest motivator was not HBP or even cholesterol but blood sugar. I knew that HBP and lipid problems were enough of a challenge on their own without adding the complication of diabetes.

For many years, I've consumed various supplements and still do, but I do not view them as any sort of magic bullet for chronic conditions - they are merely an adjunct to other healthy practices.

I am 55 years of age, 6'02" and just before I set off for the Dr. re my HBP, I was about 274lbs. By NIH standards, that is obese. It is suggested that each 2lbs of weight we lose causes a 1pt drop in Sys pressure, which is a further encouragement to me in terms of reducing / eliminating medications.

I hope that none of this sounds preachy or triumphalist because I've been down this road before. 15 Years ago I weighed 80lbs less and was in great health but over time, drifted away.

Knowledge and control are vital to our over all physical wellbeing and one area in which I do have some control is in getting to a point, weight wise, where I can stand in front of the Dr. and eliminate my weight and lifestyle as contributing factors to my condition. In previous years, a motivation might have been vanity and while to a lesser extent it still is, the overiding goal is to minimize the medical intervention required for my wellbeing.

Re: Antihypertensives and cholesterol levels

Wow!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Your progress is amazing and a good example of how important it is for us to take the responsibility for our health. After realizing what it is in our lives that's making us sick - unhealthy diet and a lack of exercise and other bad habits acquired through life- we need to do everything we can to change it.

This is exactly what I've decided to look into - eating according to the glycemic index of foods. I have yet to research this and get started.

I know exactly just how motivated one can be - a possibility of moving into the diabetic range was discussed yesterday during my appointment, based on recent labwork - something I'd prefer not to have to deal with. For this reason, I'll take the doctors' advice and really watch what I eat. I guess I'll have to eat fewer fruits. I have to do some reading about this ASAP.

I visited my gilfriend, a healthcare worker, right after my appointment. She suggested I start measuring my food portions according to the diabetic guidelines rightaway. She also suggested I stop eating all white bread, rice, pasta and sugar. Apparently, implementing that one small change in one's diet helps lose a few pounds. I now wonder if there are any differences between the glycemic index foods and diabetic guidelines. I guess I have a lot of homework to do!

Thanks for your insights and for sharing. Because of the nature of this illness, we hear about a lot of setbacks. It's nice to read about others' accomplishments!

This is good advice and overall, not as stern as an impact on your daily life as you might think. Resources that show the GI for various food types and portions are very interesting and useful as you embark on this course. Getting off of refined carbs will effect you a little in the beginning but after a short while, you won't notice it.

Good luck.
