Can someone please refresh my memory about HBP at night?

I have read on the forum that BP follows a pattern. I just have forgotten what that pattern is,and cannot find it in the old posts.

My BP is getting a bit higher around 8-9 pm at night. This makes me a bit anxious because it's a relatively new occurance. I always had low BP at night. 105/68. I definately am a dipper, and my BP when I sleep is low.

I take 40 mg propranol with 8mg Atacand at 7 am, then again at about 1 pm. But lately I have had to take BP meds again at 8 or 9 pm,and this is bothering me,as this is a new phenomenon. My pressures are about 130/85-89 sometimes a bit higher, and I feel that may be too high for that time of night?

Any ideas?

Thank you

Re: Can someone please refresh my memory about HBP at night?

I am anxious to see the answer to your question. Mine BP has been going up drastically at around 2 a.m. every night. Even if I'm asleep it wakes me up with a headache and shortness of breath. Throughout the day my BP is good.
I take 2 meds and I don't know what to do. I told my dr and he says "we will have to monitor that."

Teacup,

It is called a Circadian rhythm.
I have an excellent book about this topic. Nighttime elevations in blood pressure have been a concern of mine. I have not had a chance to read it yet but let me tell you it is an excellent book, dealing with Circadian rhythm, physiological responses, 24 hour BP regulation, circadian factors triggering adverse events and many other related issues. It is called "Blood pressure monitoring in cardiovascular medicine and therapeutics" by William B. White.
I would like to do some reading this weekend and will post anything interesting.

Rhonda, your nighttime blood pressure elevations sound disturbing and should be investigated, especially in view of your recent stent acquisition. I'd go straight to the cardiologist's.

Waking up at night, especially with a headache, shortness of breath, and elevated pressures suggests a sleeping disorder...it might not be a sleeping disorder at all, but if I were in your shoes, I would definitely want to investigate the possibility further for several reasons...

PS Just read FG's post re your stent and cardiologist....cardiovascular problems can be caused by sleep disorders...my sleep specialist gets most of his referrals from cardiac specialists because they often are aware of the causal nature of sleep disorders and heart problems...again, I would encourage you to learn more.

Thanks Flowergirl,

I would be very intrested to know the pattern of BP throughout the day. I know it rises as the day progresses and dips when sleeping, but that's all.
