my 8 yr old daughter has just been diagnose with adhd and prescribed rittalin i have read that there can be serious side effects of the drugs and that they only mask the problem anyway. Re: i need advice

Even though it may sound way to simplistic to work, i have found from personal experience (aka from myself) that if your child is taught good study habits and is influenced possitively it will help immensely with thier condition if they even have one (which you never really know for sure since I have yet to find any 100 percent possitive test out there). I can understand what you're feeling, especially since someone is wanting to give your child a form of amphetemines at such a young age and it's very good that you have researched the side effects, which can be very serious if not looked into immediately. As far as alternative treatments are concerned I can't say that I've personally found any worthwhile answer for you there, to me they all just seem like a way to take parents money in search of some magical cure. Also, I'd like to note that the reason that the drugs (i.e Ritalin, Adderall, etc.) just mask the symptoms is because there hasn't been any "cure" found as of yet. If your child really does have it as bad as it seems my advice would be to talk to him and learn about all possible side effects and once your daughter has started taking the drug to be very sure to note any change in behavior and ask your doctor.
