Lost weight now my health sucks! HELP please!

I’m new to the boards and am in desperate need of some help – I just don’t know where else to turn to anymore!

In June 2006 I started a weight loss program – at the time I started I weighed 238 pounds. By January 2007 I had lost enough weight and was feeling great so I started to exercise even harder than I had previously, in fact I started to train for a marathon. From January to July I thought things where great – I was tired and my periods had stopped but I figured it was just menopause and thought nothing more of it after all I had turned 40 in December. Than in July I started to develop some issues that caused me first to go to two dentists and than finally a doctor. I had mouth pain that moved from the upper left back teeth to the lower right back teeth as well as a very painful ear ache. The mouth pain was reduced for the first week or so by drinking soda pop and about a week later by drinking cool water. The ear pain prevented me from lying down and thus I did not sleep much. In the past I had ear aches when I had bad teeth but after the two dental visits I was assured I had no dental issues and thus I went to the doctor. I had an ear infection and received a round of antibiotics. Treatment didn’t seem to help much as I was still drinking tons of water to ease the mouth pain and I still was not able to sleep. Two days after the antibiotics ended I once again returned to the dentist – still nothing wrong with my mouth so I called the doctor. She prescribed another round of antibiotics as well as an antihistamine this time. Things just got worse from that point. I did the antibiotics and the antihistamine but the pain was so bad that I could not sleep at all as I had to have water in my mouth every second and I do honestly mean every second of the day I had to have water in my mouth! I was drinking six gallons of water plus a case of pop daily! Finally I ended up going to my local emergency room – they ran a momo and strep test on me which both came back fine. Because I had no insurance coverage they sent me home! As the afternoon progressed the pain got even worse! I went to another emergency room in a larger city about 40 miles away. They simply gave me a shot for pain and a sleeping agent when sent me home with instructions to see my family doctor in the morning!

In the morning I went to a different doctor than the first one I had seen. She thought I had a plugged salivary gland because of the raised bumps on the back of my tongue. She gave me an antibiotic, some pain medication, told me to suck on lemon drops to help activate my salivary glands, and sent me home. After ten days I felt much better but not 100% so the doctor gave me another 5 days worth of antibiotics. That was in August. I weighed 127 pounds at this time. It was better for a short period of time but by then I was suffering from depression something badly! Fast forwarding a little - since than I have had three teeth removed with the hopes that it would help – which it has not! I have seen three different doctors – one thought it was pain due to bi-polar [I had never been diagnosed as bi-polar before] so he put me on Lithium. I stopped taking it when the hallucinations because unbearable! The second doctor suggested I seek mental health counseling and the third doctor gave me Welburtin which I just stopped two days ago because I started to develop hives! I’m at my wits end! I’m depressed, miserable, and feel completely hopeless in ever getting better and that is why I am posting here – in the hopes that someone may have a suggestion or two of what or where to turn next!

Here is a list of my current symptoms:
* I have a painful ear ache most times on the right side but from time to time on the left side. It never goes away!
* My mouth hurts – I can’t really explain it because sometimes it’s the roof, sometimes it the teeth, and sometimes it’s the gums. My mouth pain also never goes away!
* I have headaches daily – sometimes slight and other times almost at a migraine intensive. Most often the headache is located at the base of my head on the left hand side.
* My eating had gotten out of control! I have gained 40 pounds since August! I don’t want to eat but the cravings are so intense I can’t stand it! I crave carbs – mostly sweets or kashi cereal with vanilla soy milk. I have been tested for diabetes and I am not.
* I am freezing cold all the time. I have the furnace set at 85 degrees, wear a tee-shirt, turtleneck, and sweater on the top. On the bottom I wear thermal long-underwear and sweatpants. Two pairs of socks and slippers while sitting under a blanket shivering. My temperature is normal.
* I have hives – I think due to the Welbutrin.
* I am tired. Sometimes I’m so tired I don’t think I can even get up to go to the bathroom.
* I am depressed yet I feel nervous and anxious inside. I am very anger and easily annoyed by my husband.
* I have lots of aches and pains throughout my body – the worse is lower back, left forearm, and right thigh due to an enlarged various vein.
* I have lost a lot of my hair during my weight loss and had attributer it to that.
* I have a hard time remembering things and some days even have what I call mushy-head, which is just a mushy feeling in my brain.
* My stomach and lower abdomen are huge – not sure if its bloat or the weight gain.
* When I exercise I get very tired and out of breathe. I can feel my heart beat in my head.
* My skin is very thin – you can see my veins easily in my arms – and my skin is very dry.
* I am very constipated and often do not have a bowel movement for a week at a time.
* My personality has changed a lot over the past year. I was a happy, bubbly, out going person until I started to lose this weight now I am a miserable, sad, quiet person who never leaves her home. Prior to the weight loss I was a very sexual person now I have no desire to have sexual or be intimate with anyone. I know that part of this is the depression but I don’t think all of it is – I’m just not sure what else it could be.
* My eyes are dry - I use drops but they still burn from the dryness.

Well I guess that covers most of what is wrong with me – I would greatly appreciate any ideas or suggestions anyone has.

P.S. Could this be an STD?

Thanks again for you help.

Re: Lost weight now my health sucks! HELP please!

Hello,

I don't know about all your symptoms, but I am wondering if part of the problem might not be thyroid. Hair loss, period, intolerance of cold/heat, dry skin, heart palpitations, tiredness and depression can be symptoms. I would ask your doctor for a thyroid test. It sounds to me like they are throwing medicine at the problem, instead of determining the true cause.
Are your stomach and abdomen hard? Mine were rock-hard, come to find out, I was carrying 130 pounds of water weight.

I'm sorry I'm not more help. You and your husband are the biggest advocates for your health care, don't give up!

Re: Lost weight now my health sucks! HELP please!

You should get more detailed Thyroid testing. A lot of times the testing comes out "normal" when it's really not, and some more detailed testing can help to determine if there really is a problem.
Also, I wonder if all of your mouth pain and headaches have to do with gritting your teeth... do you know if you grit your teeth or clench your jaw in your sleep? I had a tooth pain and my dentist was stumped as to what it was from, and I went to see a root canal specialst, and after a bunch of different tests, he asked if I grind my teeth. I told him I tend to clench my jaw when I'm at work and during the night, so he gave me a mouth guard to wear during the day and night, and the pain was gone within a week, and also cured the tension headaches I'd been getting constantly. I wore the mouth guard for a couple weeks, and it actually broke the habit of clenching my jaw altogether.

NO, thyroid is not the result of excessive salt use.

Have you been tested for allergies?
HAVE you been tested for STD? If you have had a sexual encouter with unprotected sex I would certainly be tested for any and all.
What other tests have your doctors run?
