Re: spironolactone for acne

skimom-
from what i have read you seem to know more about spiro than anyone. i am a 24 year old girl who has suffered from terrible acne since i was 12. i have been on accutane 4x. A year ago last month was the one-year anniversary of finishing my last round. And..surprise surprise...i am again badly broken-out. After reading all the posts on this board, i asked my doctor for spiro. I have been on 100mg for 1 month now. I am concerned though: my skin has gotten much worse. The oil has lessened a lot but I have developed what seems like hundreds of small bumps on my forehead (where i never used to get any acne) and have had a few pimples pop up on my cheeks. did you daughter experience an initial breakout? was she on an antibiotic at the beginning?(i think i may call my doctor tomorrow to ask for something to help get me through this--bactrim maybe?). How long did it take for her to see results?
i am sorry for the deluge of questions but you seem so educated about this topic that i would really appreciate any input. I am in gradschool and this last bout with acne has been particularly difficult to bear. thanks in advance---and thanks for all you've contributed to these boards.

Re: spironolactone for acne

Hi there, everything I know I have learned from Dr. Geoffrey Redmond's book and now from experience with my daughter. I would search on line for him by the way. Since she takes Yasmin too and started out on a smaller dose of spiro, I don't know if her experience would be quite the same as yours.

What she told me is that her skin changed from about the first day on Yasmin. She didn't take spiro at all until the following month when she took 25 mgs. The month after that, 25 mgs. more were added. Her skin got softer from the start and her breakouts changed to less often and smaller. She was clear in 4 to 6 months. The same thing happened to me in my 20's when I took a high estrogen bc pill, but I was clear in a week. I know, unbelievable but it is true and my acne was truly horrible. Yes, she took an antibiotic and that helps alot though the initial time. She is so attached to her antibiotic that she still takes Doxy but has cut the dose in half. I want her to quit it but I think it still spooks her to think of doing that. Acne does something to ones psyche as I can attest.

She has also had great luck with Bactrim in the past so that is a good one to try. Many people experience an initial outbreak it seems. Also, many people break out initially where they never did before. I would encourage you to hang in there, maybe get some facials, wear more makeup maybe. Anything to get you through this time. I know it's tough.

Re: spironolactone for acne

thanks a lot for your reply.
Two days ago my doctor prescribed me minocycline and I think that it has helped some in the short time I've been taking it. I feel better that I have a little extra support(minocycline) while my body adjusts (hopefully) to the spiro. that's great about your daughter-- she's lucky to have such an informed and caring mom!
