Unhappy My mom has pneumonia.. what are the chances she will die?

My mom is very active. She is always out shopping, and even though she is a little thick, she still eats very good. I am not sure wich type of pneumonia she has but all i know is, she started with fever, muscle pains, headaches. I think its the virus type. What are the chances that she would die? She is currently taking anti-biotics at our house. So if you could please just be straight up with me right between the eyes. By the way she is 44 years old.

Re: My mom has pneumonia.. what are the chances she will die?

The only complications I know of that could send her to the emergency room for pneumonia are heart problems, respiratory problems (COPD, asthma, etc.) or immune deficiency disorders. If she is otherwise healthy, I expect she will make a full recovery with continued care. Her age of 44 is not an issue. Generally people 60 and older are more at risk.

My last bout of pneumonia was when I was 40 and I have low grade asthma and an artificial heart valve. They put me on antibiotics and a steroid inhaler, and I stayed home from work for three or four days. I recovered just fine and at 51 have not had another recurrence.

Your mom sounds very healthy except for the pneumonia but with antibiotics she will be fine. Your mom is going to be around for you for a long time.

Re: My mom has pneumonia.. what are the chances she will die?

I just got over a case of pneumonia, myself. I'm 34 and not all that active. The doc put me on Levaquin and that seemed to help. I really thought I was going to die because of how bad I felt, but I didn't, so I'm glad.

My grandmother, who was 89 at the time. had an even more severe case of pneumonia than I did and she lived through it. She got it again about 5 months later and lived through that also. And she has all kinds of heart disease and other stuff wrong with her. So if my 89 year old grandma (who by the way is now 91 going on 92) can live through pneumonia with all of what's wrong with her, then your mom, who is way more healthy and active, should have no problems recovering.

The only thing is, she may notice that the cough lingers for about a month or so after she is better. That's the same thing with bronchitis. She'll feel a lot better but the cough will stick around for a bit. That's totally normal.

Re: My mom has pneumonia.. what are the chances she will die?

I am 73, last year I had pneumonia and whooping cough in April. Then in September I had pneumonia again.

I took medication at home both times and weathered out the pneumonia. I am still kicking now!! It was important that I did not just stay in bed, needed to be up and move about, helps the lungs.

If your mother takes care of herself, chances are she will be up and around before too long, living life as before. It does take time to get rid of pneumonia, just hang in there, be patient and allow the body to heal.

There are always risks from illnesses, however, the kind of health a person is in before becoming ill helps a lot in their recovery.

Your mom will need to rest a lot, so, please do as much as possible so she can rest. The body heals better when we get plenty of rest. Rest is necessary to prevent a relapse of pneumonia.
