Smile Reglan and reflux

I just started using something similar to Reglan from another country and I have had no burping, no gas, no reflux for over a week now. I have had such problems in the past that I have to have an endo every couple years because my esophagous is such a mess as well as gastritis and duodenitis. Reglan tightens up the LES valve and relaxes the valve that goes into the stomach therefore moving the food faster thru the stomach so it doesn't just sit there and require more acid to digest the food. I asked my gastro Dr. a couple years ago about it and he said it was OK to use but I never used it with any regulairity until about 10 days ago. I would suggest that anyone having bad problems ask your Doctor about trying Reglan which is available in the US to see if it might help. I have little gas, little burping and no feeling of fullness and what's better regular bathroom trips, no contipation or diahrea. I have been beating my head against a wall for years and I am really upset that no Doctor ever suggested this when nothing else worked. All I ever got was take more Nexium or Prevacid and that didn't work. I know Reglan can have some side effects but it is most likely a trade off as it usually is.

Re: Reglan and reflux

Canyon,

what is the medication from another country? Just on the chance it is from this country - if you don't mind. You say it is effective, and that's what counts. I don't know if Raglan is available here. I'd have to check.
Glad to hear you've found something that seems to be working for you . If this foreign drug meets with your doctor's approval, it must be well known. So please let us know what its name is. I know there's a generic form of Nexium available in Canada but cannot remember the name at the moment. I have not tried it. Perhaps that is what you mean?

Re: Reglan and reflux

Hi Flowergirl,

Reglan is different from Nexium. I'm not sure if you can get it in Canada but it's probable not something you should take without being under the care of a Dr. The generic name is: metoclopramide

This will be the next one I get from the Gastro Dr. For some reason, he was hesitant to prescribe it to me unless he was left with no other options. I am at that point now so we'll see at the next visit.

Re: Reglan and reflux

Canyon,

Are you using a PPI in conjunction with your motility drug?

Flowergirl,

I noticed you are from Canada, as am I. My doctor just precribed for me a drug called domperidone. It is similar to Reglan but has far fewer side effects. This is a drug that our friends in the U.S. don't have access to. I think it hasn't been approved there. It is also a motility drug, and is supposed to move food through the stomach faster so you have fewer digestion-related problems. The Nexium alone wasn't working really well for me anymore so I just got a prescription for the domperidone and started taking it yesterday. I'm also still taking two 20 mg Nexiums per day. I'm hoping this is the answer!

Re: Reglan and reflux

In Canada the one I take is called Motilium and it is available by prescription. In the rest of the world except the US it is available over the counter. My regular Dr. who I saw yesterday and is from India is not familiar with it but I wanted him to know i was taking it adn I am sending him the info on it just to be sure. It works the same as Reglan. My Gastro who is Indian but not from India is the one that knew of it and he said the only reason it is not in the US is that it is so cheap now after being on the market for so many years there would be no money in it to go thru the FDA approvals. It is made by a large Pharmaceutical company. I don't think anyone should take anything without discussing it with their Doctor and certainly not from something that anyone on any forum says but it is something that I would suggest you talk to you Doctor about trying. Since they give the one I am taking to Mothers nursing babies in larger quantities to increase milk supply I personally felt it must be safe but what is safe for one person is not for another so caveat emptor or however you spell it.
