Re: Reglan and reflux

Hi Canyon
Thanks for the advice. I assume you can buy these probiotics in a health food store?? I do eat a yoghurt with probiotics every day, but maybe it doesn't have enough to make a difference. I mentioned the doxycycline to my GP when this first started (I had been prescribed it by an opthamologist) and she said "yes, this could definitely affect the stomach". But she never suggested a natural remedy to re-balance things. The ENT also seemed more focused on the hiatial hernia. I just don't think this is the entire cause. I will definitely make more of an issue of the antibiotic use when I see the GI specialist. I'd like to get off the Nexium, eventually. I could live with being on the domperidone long-term, if necessary.

Re: Reglan and reflux

Kassie,

Best of luck to you. I've heard about the domperinone from my pharmacist. I guess it will be up to the gastroenterologist to decide what, if any, additional meds I'll need. I am curious to learn whether or not taking two medications concurrently for the same problem will prove effective in reducing the symptoms. I hope it works.

I am not comfortable with taking any medication over a long period of time because of the potential long-term effects. Perhaps I tend to worry too much. Most studies do not span decades or even years and are much shorter in duration. How then can anyone be sure the drugs we are told to take are safe in the long-term? I am on one, an aldosterone antagonist, whose long-term effects have not even been studied in people, but it caused tumors in rats. Not a nice thought. Since I seem to have no choice in the matter, I guess I'll have to take my chances.

Re: Reglan and reflux

Kassie,

Antibiotics are a HUGE CULPRIT for worsening or even causing GERD and reflux. I too have this problem and am suffering BADLY right now. My Prevacid is not helping.

Went to a health food store for the first time and was given Probiotics - I too ate Probiotic yogurt but was told by the staff that there is not nearly enough - I bought one with 15 million bacteria in it??? Anyway they recommeded one with 30 million but as I had never taken it before I decided to start low and increase it Its just one pill a day so once this 30 day supply is done I will increase it to the 30 mill. one that they recommended.

I believe that my GERD is being affected by Candida (overgrowth of yeast) that was brought on by my use of steroid asthma medication and a round of Zithromax for bronchitis. Hoping that I can get my body 'back in balance' and it will calm things back down.

Beside the Probiotic they recommended 'digestive enzymes' (since I had my gallbladder removed 3 years ago) -- and a low carb diet for the next couple of months. I started the Probiotics 5 days ago, one more week and I will add the digestive enzymes to see if the helps (I like to add just one new thing at times). I'll let ya know.

Feel better SOON.

Canyon,

I am so glad that the Reglan is working for you - hope you feel BETTER everyday!!

Vanessa

Re: Reglan and reflux

Any store that carries vitamins and supplements. I get mine from a food chain that is sort of a "unique" type store with high quality, low prices unusual items but there are around anywhere. Some people like one over another but I haven't seen much difference. Some you have to keep in fridge to keep the "critters" alive, I guess. You may get some ideas from other people. I have no idea why Doctor don't recommend it when they know full well what antibitoics do. For some yogurt during treatment works. Everyone is different. Yes, I am so glad not to be on the Nexium. For now if I get an acid problem i will just take Maalox or a Pepcid. Last night I had chili(no beans) and I had a little acid problem but not near what it would have been without the Motiliium.

Re: Reglan and reflux

Thanks for all the info on the probiotics.

Vanessa, do you take the Prevacid in addition to the probiotic pill? I'm kind of worried about adding another pill on top of the Nexium and the domperidone that I already take, especially without talking to a doctor first.

Flowergirl, I'm on day 4 of the domperidone use and I really have to say I don't feel as bad as before. My throat is only mildly sore as opposed to really sore and the lump has been reduced as well.

Canyon, I too wonder why doctors just throw prescription meds at everything. Well, I know why, but still .....
