Re: Finally a diagnosis, Rx of tapazole

I've been lurking... sorry to butt in on a subject I know very little about - hyperT.
But to me, your free Ts don't look at all hyper. Do you think so, GravesGirl? The FT4 could actually be considered on the hypo side. Doesn't one or the other have to be high in the range or above to be considered hyper?

I mean, low TSH alone doesn't make one hyperT, does it? I would be leaning more toward pituitary dysfunction causing the hypOthyroidism. Have you been checked for that, Keystone? I think that would explain your coldness and other hypo-like symptoms. I'd be reluctant to take Tapazole until someone proved to me... using his own voice, to be sure... that I was actually hyperthyroid. I'm not at all sure you are.

Re: Finally a diagnosis, Rx of tapazole

I did have my ATCH and HG, and Cortisol tested. Is that what you mean, as far as pituitary?
This was last year:

Atch < 5 (6 – 48 PG/mg)
HumanGrowth Hormone 0.1 (0.0 -6.0 UG/DL)
Cortisol am serum 7.7 (6.0 – 28.0 UG/DL)
I was told these were normal

And this was just last month:
ACTH 8 pg/ml range (6 – 58)

Cortisol Plasma 12.2 mcg/dl range (4.3 – 22.4)

I am really confused now myself!

Re: Finally a diagnosis, Rx of tapazole

I don't know as much about secondary and tertiary [the kind due to hypothalamus dysfunction] hypoT as I do primary.... But the test for those is a TRH stimulation test and possibly an MRI of the brain.

It can be hard to find someone to perform the TRH, but it seems it would be worth it to know for sure if your pituitary and/or hypothalamus are working together to produce enough TSH.

The way this test works ~~~ If a person without P/H (pituitary and/or hypothalamus) defect is given an injection of TRH, it will cause the TSH to rise to between 10 an 20. In a person whose P/H are not well, the TRH will cause a spike of TSH to 40 or more. This hyper-response shows the person to be hypothyroid.

Something's not right with the diagnosis. I'm not a doctor, but I just don't think you're hyperT. What has MG said about all of this?

Re: Finally a diagnosis, Rx of tapazole

I did have a MRI last year to rule out a pituitary tumor, it was clear. I haven't heard from MG since I got the diagnosis of hyper.

Re: Finally a diagnosis, Rx of tapazole

Tha's why I'm confused, labs don't look hyper and you don't have hyper symptoms, and you WERE being treated for hypo, not hyper. I never heard of a doctor switching someone from Synthroid to Tap, it's usually used sometimes together for block and replace method. I would just stop the Synthroid and lab again in 6-8 weeks to see if you go one way or the other, and test what midwest said after that. You're on such a low dose of Synthroid,it seems you almost don't need it,I think the levels are fine.,but if anything more hypo.I think someone who knows about scans could help you too. Sorry....he's probably just going on tsh like most of them.
